I really enjoyed this book. I loved seeing how things were set up that lead to They both die at the end, while also getting our own characters and relationships. I will say I preferred They both die at the end more than this book but it was good nonetheless. I do feel like it dragged on for some parts but overall it was a good book!
I waited almost a year to pick this one up since I knew what I was getting into with the Death Cast universe. This is a prequel to They Both Die at the End and it hits just as hard for me.
This book takes place on the eve of the launch of Death Cast. Two strangers are unexpectedly connected and must navigate the first End Day together. I love reading Orion and Valentino’s POV chapters. There were times I had to put the book down and walk away because of the reality of their universe and knowing what was coming.
I could have done without the POV’s of the Rojas family though. I suspended disbelief for the first book and just went with the Death Cast system. This book mentions multiple times that they just can’t disclose how Death Cast works (like every 5 chapters they bring it up) but that you should just trust them. They spoke to the CIA after all and got their backing

3.5 rounded up! i loved all the different povs, how we got more background into deathcast, seeing mateo and rufus as kids
This wasn't really necessary to be published. It's the exact same plot as the first one but with an insta love that I couldn't buy into as much as the first one. There was pretty much no chemistry between the two main characters and im still not over the 9/11 trauma dumping within 5 minutes of meeting each other. The reviewer who said the plot is just the Tumblr post that was "who do you think gave you the heart?" Is so right and that's all I could think about for most of this. Overall this is a pass. It's fine but it didn't do anything new or exciting. Which feels like a missed opportunity because I do think a prequel couldve been really interesting this just...wasnt.
A lovely prequel and expanding on how knowing it is your death day would change what you do. Valentino is planning to start a new life in NY. He gets the call telling him he will die and meets Orion at the same time. They vow to make his last day the best possible experience.
3.5 ⭐
Me gustó esta precuela, buena construcción del mundo sin perder la conexión con el primer libro.
Tengo un issue con Adam Silvera y eso me hace bajar a 3.5 estrellas. Junto a The First to Die at the End leí History is All you Left Me y si bien ambos libros tienen su propia historia, no dejo de pensar que su línea narrativa es la misma.
