2nd re-listen. Upping my rating to full 4 stars from 3.6 stars rounding up lol.

I always loved Floodgates even though it's one of Mary Calmes's stories that hasn't seen much traction.

I love it because it's down to earth, with no extravagant descriptions, with not a million side characters that have nothing to do with the story and not an oblivious but likeable by all MC. Cord and Tracy have great chemistry and I just loved seeing a 5 year build up (the build up was off page) resulting in such a strong HEA.

As far as narration goes, I love Michael Anthony's voice but to be honest sometimes I couldn't distinguish between his Tracy voice and his Cord voice and there was very little performance and feeling.

Wavering between 2 and 3 stars. Full review to come, getting down thoughts now while it's fresh.

The Dimah stuff had nothing to do with anything at all and could have easily been left out, but then I decided it's just there to make Tracy seem like a dumb kid who needs to be chided about his choices by everyone around him. The shooting was never resolved, and was just another way to make Tracy a Perils of Penelope Pitstop character. Not one but TWO completely unrelated people threatening him?

Breck was scum. You know he cheated more than we found out about. The family/old boyfriend stuff was so inconsistent and out of left field, as was him lifting a hand to Tracy.

I didn't like Celia either. She seduces the guy's boyfriend (not that I imagine it took much effort on her part), then asks HIM to step aside? Some nerve, even if Tracy was out by this point.

Oh, and how coincidental that she happened to be a bridesmaid to the daughter of the woman Tracy' dad is seeing, and they all, yes DoucheBreck included, end up at Tracy's dad's house.

Loved the Brandt family, but man, are people really that touchy feely? I have never seen any of my male relatives or friends be so huggy or kissy with each other.

Leave the freaking state to fly cross country to draw the crazy person out? Fantastic idea. How come Tracy's former cop current DEA brother didn't take time off work to go with them? No idea.

Not one but two people get kidnapped under police protection. Keystone cops, here. Dimah sent two guys to watch Tracy, and they did nothing, wtf? But Dimah, who has this type of people to send this way isn't mobbed up. OK, yeah.

I could have used more time with Cord and Tracy together, and I would have liked a little more drama between them. It was like they both gave in and decided to stop being mean to each other too easily/quickly, and after all the crap with Breck, Tracy trusted Cord, who was quite the manwhore himself, a little too easily. I'm wondering if Alex is going to end up being gay or bi and having a relationship with Dimah?!

Didn't much care for the M/Cs. Hope there will be a Dimah/Alex book tough.

I'm so not surprised that I loved it! Even taking little tiny breaks I still read it too fast. I didn't want it to end. Love Mary Calmes books...

I really love Mary Calmes. She writes the best stories for me, because I am such a hopeless romantic. Everything I've read by her so far has catered perfectly to that, and Floodgates was no exception.

This was so cute and fluffy and WONDERFUL *happy sigh*

I'm sure I'll be re-reading this again, and if you're a Mary Calmes fan already, or just a hopeless romantic like me, you'll love this.

Such an adorable ending, too :)

2023 edition, an updated version: I was amused to discover that I remembered nearly nothing from reading the first version of this book. I've read many Calmes novels since then.

This one is about average for this author: nearly always single POV, that MC is nearly always quirky, underestimates his looks, and is a 'fixer.' He also allows way more touching from people than I'd be comfortable with. There are all the usual dialogue tags she's known for, the danger, and the often amusing sex scenes.

I did not remember who the bad guy was, so really it was about time to re-read this. There are some editorial mistakes but not many. I think this author has written far better plots, so I've reduced the rating to average. Ah, personal growth and experience.

2017 review of original version, 5 stars at the time:
I wish I could read this again for the first time.

Everything is from Tracy's point of view. I found his understanding-curve to progress organically through the course of the story, his blind spots aren't always obvious to the reader. (To this one, anyway.) I guessed the perp but the way it's revealed is good. The end maybe goes on a little longer than necessary, but I enjoyed it: it has a purpose.

I've seen a couple reviews comparing this (unfavorably) to another novel of the author's, A Matter of Time. I'll read the free sample. Maybe I'll agree. Floodgates hooked me in before I finished the second chapter; Tracy's voice stays true all the way through.

*** 2.5 Stars ***

A fluffy popcorn read that was let down by a doormat of a main character, too many ludicrous plot points and improbable red-herrings, and an entire gaggle of extraneous characters.

Favourite quote:

"I'm keeping you, Trace. You need to get it right in your head."
I already had. Fast had never scared me, only indecision.
