In Floodgates, we are introduced to a whole new set of characters. For awhile now we have been settled in comfortably with our favorite characters, and I know I have loved it. Then along come Tracy Brandt and his own caravan of crazy. Tracy brings along his (maybe) ex-boyfriend Breckin, his friend and business partner Dimah, his brother Evan, the actor, his other brother Alex, the DEA agent, and Alex’s former work partner Cord Nolan, the police officer.

The reason it doesn't get the full 4 stars or more, was because I felt like the story between Cord and Trace was late in starting with the book. I always enjoy the back drop and the beautiful way Calmes incorporates it in her stories, as well as describing the present without it becoming tedious and tiring to read through, but this book felt like it was dominated with scenes between Trace and every other character in it, especially Breckin, except Cord even when Trace and Cord were actually together.

Also I don't know I see something between Alex and Dimah, on the other hand though that just might be my wishful thinking.

I love Cord! I love Tracy's family and friends! I really dislike Breckin and I figured it out kind of when we were introduced to him. Lol!
I enjoyed this book. I haven't read a lot of this author's books so it's all new to me! And like I've said I have been noticing that I like the addition of mystery in what I'm reading so I definitely liked this! ♥

I absolutely loved Cord. So sweet and like a knight in shining armor.

Rather muddled storyline that confused me. Didn't get the whole quasi-serial killer type person and the need to go to Vermont!! I actually liked the Dimah storyline and how that played out. I almost DNFed but didn't because I liked Tracy. Really one of Mary's MCs - likeable guy, everyone likes him, he's sensible, had a great family. Typical MC in a Mary Calmes book! Breckin was quite the douche. Also sort of questioned Celia's scruples. Liked Tracy's family and his friends. Just the mystery was very confusing, not suspenseful and frustrating.

Audiobook review

This one didn't work for me. There were parts that were ok but most of the book was aggravating.
I find Tracy, let's just call him doormat, really annoying. You walk in on your boyfriend cheating on and he continually tries to be nice to him and gives him mixed vibes. The guy is a constant liar and you're worried about hurting his feelings. Just kick him to the curb and that would have solved all the issues.

I didn't get the whole relationship between Cord and Tracy. It just happened and didn't make sense how it did happen.

The narrator also let this one down he just didn't have any range. His male voices were pretty much all the same and he didn't;t have any female voices at all.

I wish I could read this again for the first time.

Everything is from Tracy's point of view. I found his understanding-curve to progress organically through the course of the story, his blind spots aren't always obvious to the reader. (To this one, anyway.) I guessed the perp but the way it's revealed is good. The end maybe goes on a little longer than necessary, but I enjoyed it: it has a purpose.

I've seen a couple reviews comparing this (unfavorably) to another novel of the author's, A Matter of Time. I'll read the free sample. Maybe I'll agree. Floodgates hooked me in before I finished the second chapter; Tracy's voice stays true all the way through.

Tagged as "Whole Book Written before an Early Lunch".

Nothing else would excuse the mess of:-
* plots presumably interrupted by a Person from Porlock, because they go nowhere;
* plots that loop the loop--a lot;
* cops investigating all past lovers except the murderer;
* a cheating ex who loves the MC still. Oh, yes, he does. Oh, no, he doesn't. Oh, yes... Oh, no...

And, OK, I have a weakness for books in which an MC groans, "You're mine--mine, I tell you." (The MC has to groan this, not simply declare it, of course.) But even Cord's possessive groaning (and occasional moaning) was not enough to save "Floodgates" from being, frankly, a hot mess.
