The Shuddering

Ania Ahlborn

3.75. Predictable, annoying MC but lots of snowy gruesome mayhem.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Ania Ahlborn created characters that were all unique that I actually felt attached to. The writing was great and painted quite the image in my head, like I was in the story itself.

I devoured this book within 24 hours. I stumbled across this because it was recommended as a book that is very similar to one of my favorite video games, Until Dawn. It very much was! Overall, I loved this book, but the ending was fairly disappointing which is why I only give it four stars instead of 5.

“It sounded almost human, like a valley of people moaning before death.”

Synopsis

A group of close friends gather at a secluded cabin in the snowy mountains of Colorado for a final get together. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something sinister is lurking in the woods.

Thoughts

This is not a summer read. AT ALL. There's something enthralling about a book set in a secluded location when it's snowy. I recommend reading this with a good amount of blankets present.

The Shuddering started off strong with sudden monster introduction and gruesome murders, but things slow down once the main characters are brought into the story. Once everyone's dynamics with each other are established, they really have nothing new to offer in terms of their backstory or internal conflict.

The main aspect keeping this novel going is the horror scenes where the snowy-creatures were present. The creatures are very well described (I could picture them in my mind perfectly), and the depiction and violence they brought into the story kept the tone chilling and disturbing right until the very end.

I recommend this book if you're a fan of the stereotypical classic horror films where a group of people are trying to survive something sinister while seamlessly being picked off one by one.

I enjoyed this a lot. The first chapter or so felt slow, but then it was nonstop spooks. I would recommend this to horror fans that enjoy a good cabin in the woods vaca spook. I wanted to read a good spook novel and that is what I got. It didn't shatter my world, but it was fun.

It was nice to read a horror book with fleshed out characters you could cheer for who seemed to actually mostly think things through. Excellent.

I started this book thinking I would have a hard time finishing. The characters were so annoying to me - I didn’t like them or the writing around them. But those moments of horror, the descriptions of the monsters out in the snow, kept me reading. And I’m really glad I did! Once the action kicked in, I was hooked. The characters even grew on me. All of the horror, gore, and descriptions of the monsters were killer! (no pun intended) This book would make such a good movie, sci-fi & horror combined. I’m interested in reading more from this author!

Eh. Nothing great. Typical mediocre horror story in the cabin in the woods

This book was amazing. I normally steer clear of creature features because they don’t terrify me the way other aspects of horror do, however this book did the trick. Whilst I found the monsters themselves mildly scary, i find it unbelievable somebody managed to craft a book so bleak, and after 281 pages, there was still a bitter taste left on my tongue (let’s just say it was less than a happy ending).

A bad 80s horror movie in book form. No depth to the story and characters that were one dimensional.
