This was one of my first "big reads" in English (I'm German) and I was delighted!
It was such a moving and thrilling story. I liked the writing, plotting and the tone of it. Overall a big recommendation!

(Plus if you read the book I also can recommend the movie. It is rarely that a film version is almost as good as the book.)

I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. I wasn't expecting to cry with joy, sadness, and heartbreak. This book really made me feel something. I don't really have the capacity to describe or define what I'm exactly feeling. Only that I'm feeling something. Overall, I simply love this book.

If this is a historical fiction, though, it could have fooled me. There is really nothing fiction about it except for the characters themselves. Themes and descriptions noting racism, racial violence, segregation, and feminism. They existed, and they still exist today, which makes this book timely and relevant. No doubt about it.

I read this book in a day, I wanted to read it before I saw the movie. To say I enjoyed it would be putting it mildly. The characters in this book get under your skin. They enable you to feel their frustration. Some parts of the book I laughed out loud and some parts of the book were so frustrating that I had to put the book down. But thats what this kind of book is supposed to do. Its supposed to make you feel frustrated and ashamed for some of the characters in the book like Hilly. Skeeter is amazing and she makes you feel so proud and you are really able to feel like you are in her shoes. Everything Minny said made me laugh. But to see her life and how tough she has to be because of the things going on it was heartbreaking. Aibileen was fantastic. Seeing her keep her calm after everything inside her she wants to say is fighting to get out is powerful. This book is wonderful. There shouldn't be a doubt at all to read it.

I fell in love with this book from the first chapter. I quickly became attached to each of the characters and their individual stories. A perfect summer time read- I simply did not want to put it down and mourned when it was over.

This was such an enjoyable book. It’s a good reminder of how rough things used to be and still are. I will say I’m rounding up a little because even though I really liked the story I felt uncomfortable that a white author was the one to write it. It’s hard to explain, but it’s similar to why Minnie was upset that it took Miss Skeeter (a white woman) to work on the main project within this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover! The characters in this novel are very easy to relate to and I found myself becoming attached to them almost immediately. Although this is a very serious and controversial topic, I was pleasantly surprised at how light the mood could be in parts. It's a good thing that I read this book over the summer because I could hardly put it down! I strongly recommend this book for anyone that is considering reading it!
