Derek Knight's story. Derek has been sent to England to make sure the money is sent to India for the war he helped start. There he is drawn to Lily, who has set her sights on Edward to restore her family's fortune.
I did like the defense of the victim of underage rape.

For books of this genre they all tend to be the same, and it usually takes a little something extra to get above a three star rating.
This novel had `it` in spades. Perfectly written lead couple, flawed but with suitable and realistic development. Lily was shy and I thought too cowardly to like, but Derek bought out a fiestiness in her that you couldn't not admire.
Derek was so impressive, I mean, the man broke a bed! But he was so protective and so clearly devoted to Lily, so taken with her personality and solving any problems, that I couldn't not love him.
Their banter was endearing and made me smile, their relationship so real that you felt their love for each other through the pages.
Loved that there wasn't one subplot - Edward - but personal developments and stories as well which came together.
I absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend, but leave Derek alone, he is allll mine!

Lily is old blood, but has no money. What is a lady of noble blood to do? Get a rich, hopefully stupid man. And she does manage to get the attention of a nobody with lots of money. And it's not like she is using him, he is using her right back. She is Ton. He is nothing. She has no money. He has money.
But that is not the way of a romance. Of course there needs to be drama.
The drama is named Derek. He is a good guy. Soldier through and through. Nowhere as rich as the guy she has on her hook. He is a player. She is pretty. He does want her.
So they start to fall even though they do not want to. But he is still all, I can't! And she is all, I must marry rich! And is everything ok with the guy she has on the hook?
So yes a bit of drama. And the longest after the HEA ever, seriously, it went on and on and on. The book could have ended long before. Cute, light, fast.

This book was good, but it is missing the spark that I love about GF's books. I felt like something was missing, not to mention the story was dragged along.
I am a sucker for good regency romance. This was much better than I expected. I liked the fact the heroine was not a virgin, and that the end was not a complete HEA wrap-up. It was more complex which I really enjoyed.

The plot was good, but an overarching theme in this spice trilogy (at least in the first 2 books) is the uncomfortable references to British colonialism in India. It’s a central theme and is hard to look at with modern sensibilities.
If you can get past that, it’s a fun read with a mystery to solve and walls around hearts to break down.
There’s one romance scene that feels a bit appropriative with lily making herself up as a fetishized version of an Indian woman.

Lily Balfour's grandfather, the only thing standing between her family and poverty has just passed away. Her only hope is to go to London and attract a rich suitor. Of course, this is complicated by the fact that she has "a past."
She does manage to attract the attention of a rich nabob but finds herself inconveniently attracted to Derek Knight. Derek is also very interested in Lily but his life is complicated by the fact that he is in London to get money the Indian army, army that the "Committee" (which probably had some official name but I can't remember it right now)is strangely relunctant to release the funds. It turns out that someone has embezzled three hundred thousand dollars and the main suspect is Lily's fiancee.
I enjoyed the story for the continuation of the series but overall, not a great book. Too much information shoved in and little details that didn't really need to be added and don't even get me started on the "romantic" scenes and the love talk. Blergh. Overall, not too bad.

I love this Pride and Prejudice/Cinderella style regency romance. It was a lot better than Georgiana's story, but the author has a habit of skating around a character's shady past with intermittent mysterious phrases and instead of making me curious it's just god awfully annoying. Just tell us how the damn woman shamed her family already! I don't want to read constant allusions to some shameful secret while staying in the dark about a character's motivations for their actions. Don't hide things from me, I'm the reader.
I thought this was the first novel in the trilogy. I didn't find out that it was the second one until I read the bonus material in the back... so I guess it doesn't matter too much what order you read them in. An interesting take on Regency London, I felt that there were a lot of modern sensibilities and attitudes mixed in here, but I'm no expert so I'm not totally sure. There were more descriptive and explicit sex scenes than in other Regency novels I've read.
