Been meaning to read more by Luren Smith and decided this series could be a fun one but I'm feeling pretty meh about it. This definitely wasn't a good romance, nothing swoony or romantic about it and the characters was not interesting to read about at all. Was more problematic than anything else

*I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is a short and steamy romance. I loved that it started with the duel and had just enough backstory to explain things. The bargain is very shocking for everyone that knows about it, but it plays out nicely. I did love how they were instantly connected and I loved the ending.

Helen is great and brave. She wasn't just looking out for her brother when she decided to take his place but was looking out for herself too. She never backed down and keep quiet when scared or mad. I loved how she stormed out near the end and how she kept her brother from the duel.

Gareth is a broken man that needs love again. At first, he came off as mean and a bit cruel, but as soon as he was back at his home he changed. He had changed after his wife died but wasn't as he seemed and his housekeeper knew it and could tell what would happen. I loved how quickly he opened up and when he told her brother what he thought.

It was short, but the pace was good.

This could have been so much better if it was a little longer...

Gareth and Helen are fun characters and their love story is beautifully written. Gareth has been hurt by loss and doing everything over the past 6 years to never feel that pain again. He’s smart, strong, passionate and protecting his broken heart. Helen on the other hand, will do anything to protect her brother. She is compassionate, smart, sweet and wiser beyond her years.

This is a short, easy read, that is light and romantic. I enjoyed these characters and was pulling for their HEA. They are relatable and for a shorter story well developed. I just wish we had gotten more of their story, more of them and more of their HEA.

Here's what I remember about this one: I read it. Do I remember what happened, or if I liked it? Nope.

This book was a quick read. Helen twin brother Martin is a gambler and a drunk. He spends all of the money inherited after their parents passed away. Helen finds out that her brother is going to participate in a duel for the money he owes from his gambling debts. She knocks her brother out and dresses in his clothes to sacrifice her life. She meets Gareth who she has had a crush on from afar for the duel. Anyways they begin to duel and she gives herself away which Gareth decides to take her for the money owed. He ruins her by taking her virginity and decides he doesn't want to marry her. He is still suffering from the loss of his wife and child. Helen agrees to come home with Gareth and they have sex. She falls hard for Gareth and he wants nothing more than the sex no love no marriage. In the end he comes to terms with his true feeling for her. He realizes that she means more to him then he wanted to admit at first. This is a good story and worth the read.
