4.1 AVERAGE

Themes: friendship, sharing

3.5 I really enjoyed the guest appearances by Elephant & Piggie.

Cookies for Everyone! This is the social Justice cry of the 4 friends who only have 3 cookies. It’s also about fractions. The artwork is bright and the characters are animated. They most scream it seems. There was not much character work going on.

I love Dan Santat’s work and I’m not feeling this one. It is a more beginning book. The kids thought it was fun being about cookies. They both gave it 4 stars.

I also didn’t like that it was book ended by elephant and piggy. I am not a fan. This was a miss for me. If it weren’t for the kids liking it so much, I would have given it 2 stars on my own. I still love Dan Santat and I look forward to any new books he writes. I wasn’t able to connect to this is all.

You know that laughter that leaves your head hurting a little bit because you maybe need more oxygen? Where you have tears running down your face because you just can't stop laughing? That's the type of laughing I did when I read this book. The art and the voice of the Hippo just killed me.

Easy Readers are difficult to do well. It's hard to find a good balance of art, plot and easy to read. The text needs to be bigger and the font needs to be simple. This book does a great job with all three.

The art is wonderful. I have always like Santat's style. The facial expressions are killer, over-exaggerated and funny in a way that's appealing to kids (and clearly funny to at least one grown-up since I laughed so hard my co-workers were concerned). The story is silly and is a math problem, which I love.

This one is going on my go to list for kids and parents looking for new easy readers.

Still weird frame narrative I think is unnecessary, but Dan Santat's story engaged me more than Laurie Keller's.

This book was great for introducing hypotheticals. Santat used a different medium, sculpture, to indicate potential situations being suggested by "could" and "should" words. It also slyly incorporated fractions and math concepts without being blatant--Hippo keeps breaking the cookies because Hippo is nervous, and the four friends end up with 12 cookie pieces: enough for three pieces each!

Also, the friends were very supportive of Hippo's anxiety. When Hippo yells, "GAH! SORRY! I CANNOT STOP!" after breaking the cookies again, Squirrel says simply, "it is what he does."

Subtle and up for interpretation for sure, but I interpreted that as a statement of fact and acceptance of Hippo's nervous habit.

Super cute! Loved the intro by Elephant and Piggie!

My son and daughter give this book 20 stars! Laugh out loud funny!

it's fun to watch the kids do the math

Love the illustrations.

I will never tire of Dan Santat's illustrations and storytelling!
