I don't typically listen to thrillers, but the narrator and story worked so well on audio! I would call this more of a mystery than thriller, but it was well done! This was a super quick audio read. I enjoyed the dual timeline and secrets throughout. However, it did feel like this was missing something and the ending was abrupt.

Sigh. This month is not off to a great start for me with another two star thriller. @scaredstraightreads mentioned in his review that maybe his time spent reading this author is done and I think I agree with him. Which truly bums me out because I’ve really enjoyed some of her books in the past but this one just really wasn’t good. It started off ok, a kidnapping plot is nothing new but I was curious to see where it would go. But things quickly turned repetitive and then went into a twisty mess. It was a convoluted disaster that didn’t make any sense, there was pages and pages of explanation as far as why the kidnapping took place but somehow there were still giant plot holes and unanswered questions? Make it make sense. And then it just ends. Super abrupt and jarring and it made me want to throw the book across the room. That’s really all I have to say, not a fan at all.

The Prisoner is my favorite B. A. Paris book that I have read so far! We have two extremely intriguing timelines to follow, and I was on the edge of my seat with the claustrophobic suspense. I found the plot to be really different from other thrillers I've read, and it was refreshing to not guess every next step. The pacing was nice as well in that the chapters are short and go back and forth between the two timelines. I really felt for Amelie, our MC, for all of the difficult and unthinkable things she went through during her kidnapping and before. I see that reviews are all hit and miss on how the plot wrapped up, but I felt that everything fell into place and came together well in the end. Overall, this was an exciting and tense read, and I'd recommend thriller lovers to pick it up! The audiobook was a great listen and keeps up the atmosphere perfectly!

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris will compel you to keep turning pages to find out what happens next. The story starts with a kidnapping and questions quickly start adding up. The dual timelines slowly merge together and bit by bit the answers we need are revealed. While the storyline is all action and no character growth, this tale is intriguing and captivating.

Readers in the mood for a quick, suspenseful read will enjoy The Prisoner. There is a reason why B.A. Paris is one of my favourite authors, and The Prisoner does not disappoint.

2⭐️- ARC

I was very excited to be able to read this before hand as B.A. Paris has written some fun mystery/thrillers! Thank you to Netgalley and St.Martins Press for a copy of an ARC in return of a honest review.

This started of with a bang; intriguing, descriptive, left you wondering what is going to happen. I loved the short chapters as it made it for a quick read. But after the first couple of chapters, i felt like it didn’t rise to the top. The story dragged on with random plots added here and there. Random character development and questions. Over explanation and retelling of every little thing let this strung out. It just got quite boring after a while and the ending was disappointing.

Overall, this is a quick read for those interested but it just didn’t meet my expectations.

The Prisoner: A Novel, by B. A. Paris  (Book Review)

B. A. Paris' book The Prisoner is an unusual and interesting story. Being a long-time fan of Paris' work I enjoyed reading this twisty book.

Synopsis:
Amalie has just married billionaire Ned Hawthorne. She is stunned to wake up in a dark room and discovers she has been kidnapped. Who is responsible and what is happening? As time passes Amalie realizes she is safer in the hands of her kidnappers than her new husband.

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris is a slow-burn and intriguing novel. I found myself rooting for Amalie, the main protagonist. The setting is atmospheric and creepy. Paris' writing is always descriptive and takes readers on an exciting adventure. The plot piqued my interest and kept me flipping the pages.

The Prisoner by B. A. Paris is available on November 1st.

Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, for sharing this heart-grabbing book with me. I appreciate your kindness!

This book started off so strong for me, and I throughly enjoyed the first half narration between past and present. However, the last half left me underwhelmed. Exciting twists were left resolved with straight forward explanations instead of storytelling. It was hard to connect with characters and there was truely no character development for the protagonist of the story. The ending left me so confused I was sure I made a mistake and accidentally skipped some pages. Overall, the book was unfortunately a miss for me.

3/5 stars

BOOK REVIEW

Thank you to @stmartinspress for the E ARC of The Prisoner by BA Paris.

BA Paris is an author that quickly became an auto buy for me after reading Behind Closed Doors. Unfortunately, since then, I have found their work very hit or miss. Sadly, The Prisoner was a major miss…

I hate dragging books in here without specific so I will try and be as thorough as possible without giving away any spoilers.

This book is divided into two parts. The first part is told from the POV of Amelie before and after / during she was kidnapped and taken prisoner. For me, this was the strongest part of the book, but I still felt as though the “present” chapters which detailed her confinement in a pitch black room to be redundant, stale and repetitive. I enjoyed reading about Amelie’s past and her group of friends, but many times through out I found myself unable to relate to her unbelievable luck and naivety.

The second part of the book is told in the present tense and details the what happens after the confinement. This is where the author COMPLETELY lost me.
For me, this novel was FAR too over plotted and FAR too unrealistic. There were a handful of times I found myself rolling my eyes and thinking “that would never happen” and “well, wasn’t that convenient”, which is absolutely not what you want from a domestic thriller. Not only was the reason behind the kidnapping completely over worked and unbelievable, but the author really tried to do something with the ending and it just did not work for me…

If you are a fan of out there, far fetched thrillers you may enjoy this one, but if you like them to be believable , I’d skip this one.

@baparisauthor is an auto-buy author for me and her newest psychological thriller is another solid read! I finished this novel in one weekend and could not put it down. I switched between the audiobook and e-book. I loved the fast pace and short chapters. While I did guess one of the twists, the plot still held my attention and had me wanting to read more. The audiobook was well narrated and I enjoyed being able to keep up with the story while running errands. You can’t go wrong with adding either the book or audiobook (or both!) to your TBR list!

Thank you to @netgalley @macmillan.audio and @stmartinspress for allowing me access to the book and audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
