Not for me
Man I had so many problems with this book and almost tossed it about a third of the way thru. Then decided I needed to finish it to see if it got better. It didn't. Trying to think about what to write for my review without putting out spoilers.
I read a ton of "romance" novels whether they be regency or paranormal or thrillers or mysteries. I just like a great story where the hero and heroine also have a happy ending. All kinds of settings and all periods in time. A significant chunk of those have graphic sex scenes, as did this one. There was just nothing romantic about the sex in this story. And the passion felt faked as if the author was so busy talking dirty to us thru our couples mouths and inner voices that we didn't get to feel the real emotion in the scene. And, I didn't want the level of "talking like a sailor" these two did. Took me out of the story too much. Or I'm just too freaking old fashioned. Both characters said too much of the wrong things and thought too much of it. Was like reading a Penthouse mag story instead of a romance. So much so I had to stop and see if the author was male or female. Yeah I know. A woman has just as much a right to write exactly what she wants, I'm conditioned to read that kind of writing as being from a man for a man. So it turned me off. Not only that but I'm used to seeing content warnings on books so readers are aware. There are none on this one so I'm going to add it.
Pedophilia. Animal cruelty. Sexual assault.
Your mileage may vary.
I read a lot of reviews now where the reviewer will add content warnings. I got to tell you this book needs them with a capital CW. Since the author didn't put it out there and it's not in the published reviews I'll provide some. Sexual assault. Animal cruelty. Pedophilia. I'm trying to think what other lines were crossed but still just reeling from the disaster that was this book.

This follows the story of Brock, after living with a tragedy, & his need to find himself. Which lands him in the plane of Jessie, the bush pilot who takes him out to the lone wilderness in Alaska with no other human for months at a time. Ill say it got super dark there for a second but this story of them going together is very fated to be. & Brock’s dirty talk was HEATINGGGGG it up!!!

This book was surprising. It was much rawer than I expected, and it made the book so right. There are some challenging scenes in this book, but they go so well with the novel's atmosphere. The dangerous beauty that is the Alaska wilderness is deceptive. We forget the freezing temperatures, wildlife, and isolation. We forget that some may go into that wilderness and lose a bit of their humanity in the process.
Brock has giant old demons tearing him apart inside. Their names are guilt and shame, and he's chosen to saddle himself with them as he escapes to just be by himself. He's found a cabin, and he plans to be there by himself and remove himself from the world he doesn't feel comfortable with any longer. He manages quite well, but his story is exciting, scary, and you feel you are on that dangerous razor with him as he encounters Alaska's wild.
Jessie has lived in Alaska her whole life, and she's dealing with keeping the aircraft company her father started going despite being squeezed by an evil competitor. There is so much more to that story, as we discover later. She's crazy cool, and confident. She barrels into Brock, and it's intensely right how they fit together. But both have way too much baggage. What we watch is how the two starts dropping that baggage as they draw closer and closer together.
Then, Alaska's wildness throws down challenges, and we get to watch as these two battle and win. There is some crazy exciting stuff in this novel, and it is a fun, breathtaking, squeeze your eyes shut, ride to the satisfying conclusion. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series as I just can't wait to see where Brock and Jessie have settled and what they are doing. Man, this is a raw, intense read and so worth your time.

Unexpectedly gritty yet sweet
Um, wow.
When I saw the cover and read the blurb I thought it would be a typical romantic suspense. I thought it'd be a good palette cleanser for some of the more twisted stuff I've been reading...um, only sort of. I mean, it is a romantic suspense, but it's not the "cutesy-tootsey" one I was expecting! There's a very somber and slightly dark feel throughout the whole book and then you get to the end and ... well, yeah. Throw in amazing chemistry and some really touching and "real" moments and you get a fantastic mix!
Highly recommend! It's NOT crazy dark, but gritty enough to hold your attention!

He embraced the feral side
Brock (MMC) was running from a bad accident that hurt him and others. It was that flight that he was off to brave the Alaskan wild. Before hiding out for a couple months off the grid, he meets a local lady that keeps his thoughts warm for the winter. Jessie (FMC) gets pissed over the constant harassment from a guy (Cort) in town. Cort threatens to ruin her and all she has left of her family. To forget about the problem she takes Brock on a nice no-strings attached ride for the night. The next morning, he is gone when she wakes. She is late for her pilot job and comes face to face with the one-night stand. Dropping Brock off in the wilderness was easy, staying away seems to become hard. Add in Brock’s personal trauma and Jessie’s problem with a local and things get bumpy. This story is a perfect easy read about two people redefining themselves and dealing with some serious dark problems. It gets gritty and dark with several trigger warning situations. TW/18+

This was the first book ive read by the author, I really enjoyed the story line. Two characters that had rough things going on in their life and after meeting just one time they couldnt get enough of each other. Jessie has someone that is trying to take advantage of her work life but also wants her. Brock is running away from his past that happened over two years ago and still cant break free of it. They both find themselves out their in the Alaska Wilderness. You should really read their story.
What I wouldn’t give to live away from everyone. The FMC is a badass and they both deserve a HEA

Wilderness was the first book I’ve read by Lynn Burke and wow! Ms Burke delivers a dark, twisted journey through Alaska that I’m not going to forget anytime soon.
Brock is an adrenaline junkie who finds himself lost and trying to find himself after a tragic accident. After being a pilot for a good portion of his life, he decides that isolation in the great wilderness of Alaska is a great place to discover himself again. After buying a cabin that has no indoor plumbing, no electricity and is completely off the grid, he starts his journey.
When he comes to the closest town he’s going to see for quite some time, he discovers a woman who gets his blood running for the first time in two years. After a wild night, he leaves her to catch his flight to his cabin. What he didn’t expect to discover was the woman who he just spent the night with is his bush pilot.
Jessie is trying to keep her father’s business afloat but isn’t having any good luck, especially when her competition wants her and her father’s business and won’t take no for an answer. When she meets Brock after another run in with her competition she thinks a night to burn off her anger is just what she needs. She didn’t expect that Brock would be her passenger or that he would be what keeps her going when things get really tough.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to end. It’s intense in the best of ways but also has a dark side that may make some feel a bit uncomfortable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read what else this author has to offer!

This was so interesting, I couldn’t put it down. This is my first book by this author. I enjoyed the back and forth these two had. He was broody and she was sassy. The wilderness was so well described. It makes me want to go camping. This book was so sexy. I enjoyed those scenes a lot. I’m going on to book 2. I highly recommend this book.
