The title of this one drew me in and the perspective from two sixth formers was a fresh narrative to the books I usually read. There’s a lot more American centred teenage murder dramas (and I love those) than British ones so this one was a definite pick up.
I also love that books like these with an insight into the teenage brain makes me feel SO old. Granted it’s been a while since I was at College but wow, reality check, my youth was so much different to these gals. I mean, broadly and proudly throwing vulvas into conversation and the proud feminism is something my youth I suppose, was greatly lacking in!
Our two MC’s, Kerry and Annie, want in on the popular scene (at least Annie does) and Kerry will always back her girl. An opportunity presents itself when Heather starts receiving threats and they are perfectly placed to help her get to the bottom of it. As a budding investigative journalist, it’s the ideal opening to get noticed by the populars. But then the plot develops with a darker twist of fate…
It was a compelling story and the audiobook was super entertaining. Some people feel born to narrate a story and this narrator did! They added the perfect voice to the characters and captured their youth expertly.

“I am strong and empowered, the patriarchy is but shit upon my shoe, good morning to all….” ❤️
I received this book as a dARC and I’m so glad I did! Kate did a wonderful job of putting together a mix of mystery, humor and pop culture. I loved the shout outs to feminism and equality.
The story itself was well written, had a couple of points that went a little slow but overall kept my attention well. I was able to figure out pieces of the mystery on my own but the complete ending was still a surprise which I enjoy.
This book gives me Pretty Little Liar and Murder in the Building vibes.

I am not quite sure how to review this book. It took me a while to read it, although that was not entirely the fault of the book itself. I thought the mystery was interesting, but not compelling enough that I didn't put it down for weeks at a time. The tone was odd and I wasn't expecting it to be quite as period forward as it was. I liked the main friendship because it felt real, although I did think that Annie had some pretty naive moments. There was nothing really wrong with the book, it may just be that I am not the target audience anymore.
I will say that I remain totally baffled by the fact that Kerry's parents were having sex in the kitchen at the time that she has to go to school. I understand that stuff happens, but she has been going to school at the approximately the same time for over a decade, so I think that they should have picked a better time.
So, Murder on a School Night was a fun read, but it was also wildly unrealistic and forced in some areas. I will say that I didn’t expect the big twist, but I also probably don’t watch enough soapy teen shows. I didn’t love the main characters (Annie = highly annoying, Kerry = highly neurotic), but their dynamic could be very sweet. It doesn’t help to realize that I was 25 when these kids were born. I just felt old when reading their constant outrage over a certain topic. I really appreciate the inclusivity of today’s youth (I just grew a gray streak after typing that) but it got tiring to keep reading about. Maybe I’m just not the right audience anymore. In any event, this book was nicely written and pretty funny, and I’m sure plenty of people will enjoy it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Katherine Tegen Books for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Probably 3.5. A solid YA mystery with characters I enjoyed spending time with, even if they made me very anxious on their behalf. It probably suffered from me reading it right after The Merciless King of Moore High, but I appreciated how much of the plot revolved around period products and their delightfully absurd connection to the murders.
