Great setup, great atmosphere, great suspense, but a shame about the coda. Innsmouth is palpably damp and gross and Lovecraft does a marvelous job of setting the tone of unease and gradually sliding into the horrific. Unfortunately the post-Innsmouth stuff isn’t that great. The “I’m actually a fish person too!” ending could have worked if it didn’t feel so clunky and eugenics-tinged. The exposition dump on the history of Innsmouth is awkward, too, but less so than in “At the Mountains of Madness”, and plus the fish people stuff is more interesting to me than the more high fantasy leanings of the Old Ones’ backstory. Still, the good parts are really good so it’s still a thumbs up from me.

Despite this being a short book, I struggled to read it. The pace is slow, the descriptions are highly detailed, the language is VERY eloquent and the story features a lot of self-reflection. I did really enjoy the last third of the book, the own corruption of the main character was the right amount of disturbing.
I wanted to read it to try out Lovecraft; his style isn’t for me, but it was an interesting view into how he, a known white-supremacist, twists otherness into revolting.

A fine read and essential for fans of Lovecraft.

Almost as scary as Camp Wannaweep

What a surprisingly happy, optimistic ending!
