you know it’s real when you cry during nonfiction

while i knew a lot of this stuff already bc of my psych background, i feel like i learned a lot of really valuable things about trauma and its clinical manifestations. this was definitely kid-based and at many points read as a guide for teachers and educators on trauma awareness and treatment. i wish it had focused a bit more on trauma in adults and the mechanisms of healing, rather than just the effects of trauma.

I LOVED THE AUDIOBOOK FOR THIS. oprah and dr. perry had such good audiobook voices and i felt like i was listening to a really fire podcast.

overall pretty fabulous, a little below my knowledge level because i’m in school for this kind of thing, but such a game changer for anyone who doesn’t know much about how trauma can affect the mind and behaviors. and now i’m bffs with oprah and dr. perry so there’s that too.

I wish I could have read this book 11 years ago when I was a first time mom struggling with PPD and PTSD after a traumatic birth.

This book was chock full of information about how our brains work and how crucial the first few months of our lives are. If this book had been around in 2012 it would have helped me better understand what my baby needed from me and how I needed help to give it to them.

Even if you don’t think you’ve experienced anything traumatic in your life, you should still read this book.

As a person who experienced some of what Oprah did as a child, always confused at what a person who loves you in words but not actions, it was very healing. Prepare yourself. ‘Building strength equated to power’ hit home. Home run.

This is a book that I’ll be holding onto and rereading many times throughout my life. It explains so much about me to me. Hopefully, I can use this trauma wisdom, as it’s called in the book, to be more helpful to those in my world and to be more connected and to create more connectedness. Oprah is Oprah for good reason!
