The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet
Alicia Silverstone
I flipped through the recipes, none of which struck me as worthy of trying. I got a little heated when I skimmed through the beginning text and she made several references to cheating on her vegan diet as a perfectly acceptable thing to do in order to survive in the "normal" world and not feel deprived. Under the "temptation" section, she explicitly says that she orders veggie sushi, and then to curb her temptation for fish sushi, she eats once piece of her friend's at the very end. Like............is this girl serious?
A little intense, lots of foods I cannot pronounce. However, I did get a lot out of this book. I am now grossed out by drinking cows milk. Now I drink almond milk, and I'm a dedicated flirter. As a nurse, who knows many dieticians, I had a few issues with this book. Cardiac diets do not say add salt to food during cooking, you SHOULD add at the dinner table. You can always add, but you can't remove the salt once it's in. Adding salt at the dinner table makes you more aware of how much is going into your food and puts the cardiac patient more in control. Also, Silverstone doesn't wash her veggies because she wants the B12 from the dirt... apparently, people with a low immune system should bot be following this diet. This book is definately worth reading if you are interested in a plant based diet, lots of suggestions and half the book is a cook book, which is great!... Just a little intense and a difficult diet to follow over all.
OH MY WORD! I loved this book so much. I keep calling it my new bible. Kidding...but seriously, Its amazing! I was looking FOREVER for a book like this - to help me figure out what I wanted to do with my eating habits and lifestyle. Its so informative and as a vegetarian trying to go vegan - it was so helpful and it felt good to NOT feel like a freak. Alicia has alot of the same views I do on things. And I love each recipe I try!!! Its so much fun. Its a great book. I have been recommending it left and right to people! I can't say enough about getting healthy and having a plant based diet. And the title is misleading - its not about losing weight. Our culture is so focused on that - its a dietary change - yes...but its more about just getting healthy and making a good impact on this earth.
While I am not a vegan, I bought this for a friend as a birthday present and then got so interested that I bought myself a copy. I like how she talks about her decisions, is not judging anyone for their choices and is only trying to get her view across in a very friendly and honest way. While I do eat meat very occasionally so I do not call myself a vegetarian or vegan I found the book really helpful. Although alot of it does not apply to Australia as we have tighter restrictions on things like free range eggs being certified and organic produce in general. It is a very worthy read whether you are a meat eater, vegetarian or a vegan. Two thumbs up for Alicia!
I really like the way Alicia approached this topic. It was informative and kept me interested enough to finish it. I am going to flirt with some options and hope to make my way to a better way of living.
It provides a good overview of reasons to be vegan without being daunting. She adds personal touches and humanizes the process. The first half has info and the second half has recipes, most of which seem pretty tasty!
I can't help it... I read this in Cher Horowitz's voice too! Her writing style lends itself to that, since it's sprinkled liberally with words like "icky." And she's not shy about talking about poop and farting, which I think is completely awesome.
Silverstone's diet is pretty specific. It'll be great for some vegans (or new vegans) but other people might want to look elsewhere for their recipes. As an urban Californian it makes a lot of sense for me; when I lived in LA I used to see Silverstone regularly at the Hollywood Farmers' Market, so I totally get where she's coming from as far as the kind of shopping and cooking she advocates. I haven't had the chance to try her recipes yet but they sound good to me!

The first part covers her food manifesto and reasons why plant-based diets are good--this part can be skimmed or skipped easily. Mostly the book is good if you're looking for more whole-grain and vegetarian recipes (her's are actually vegan). Generally I'd recommend reading Mark Bittman and Marion Nestle for those interested in what's wrong with the Western diet and why it's killing so many people, but this has some good recipes.
Eh...I was more excited about the ideas in this book than I was about the actual recipes...
