This was another struggle to rate (it was slightly better than "okay," but I'm not sure my feelings toward it actually extend so far as to say I liked it).

While I enjoyed the return of previous characters and how stories began tying together, I also felt that, once again, the author indulges in character assassination for the sake of his plots. The plots, however, are nice and twisty, which is the only thing keeping this from being an absolute clusterfuck of a series, but I absolutely hate how characters suddenly act against their previously established character with no legitimate explanation as to what changed.

I'm moving on to the last book in the series, but honestly not sure if I'll read anything else from the author after this.

3 out of 5 stars.

Third book in the Mortal Engines series, Infernal Devices moves the story forward several years. Tom and Hester have a daughter, who longs for adventures like her parents had. The arrival of the Lost Boys at Anchorage gives her the opportunity, but all does not go as planned. Ending up a slave in a floating city, she finds herself in the middle of the war as both sides seek a book that may hold the key to ending the conflict. It was a fast paced, action filled book, but felt slight in terms of plot and believability.

DID NOT FINISH: 9%

The time jump was a surprise I wasn't ready for, and I didn't really care about the new characters. Maybe I'll try it again some other time.

I don't know how it's possible but this series is really growing on me, and the books keep improving as the series goes on. Usually I find books about the children of main characters insufferably annoying, but this one surprised me. And true to the form of the past books, so did the characters. I don't want to spoil anyone's read but I have to say that my favorite thing about this author and this series is that the characters often do things I don't expect, but more than that, neither do they do the opposite of what I expect. They usually do something completely askew that is foolish and bizarre, but realistic, totally in line with their established character, and utterly... human. That being said, from where things left off in this third installment, I can't wait to read the next (last?) book in the Hungry City chronicles now.
