As usual, this was a fast fun read. I found Cassie's personality relatable (especially the fear of taking leadership part). As far as action goes, this book felt a bit like a filler but I'm interested to see where the story goes with Ax now in the picture.
That Friends reference had me GAGGING
This is easily the strongest entry since the first one.
Cassie questioning if taking over an intellectual creature was okay.
Less Yerk action and a lot more lore.
This is the kind of entry you would see mid series not book 4. It really adds a lot to the story and has me curious what’s around the corner.

I was ready for this to be the first one I didn't like because Cassie is my least favourite narrator, but I totally enjoyed it. I feel like her narration, maybe a teensie bit moreso than the others, gives great insight into the characters, because she is gentle, caring and good at reading people. I also relate to her not wanting to make decisions or be in charge, because she doesn't want to be responsible for people's lives.
I found some of the morph action bits a bit far fetched this time around, but I really like the spirit behind the adventure. Also, we meet Ax, my precious cinnamon bun!

I think this is my favorite of the first four books, I loved the descriptions and writing Applegate did of the ocean and the sea creatures. Applegate also finally touches on some morality issues facing the group. Just so much goodness in this one, plus we meet an exciting new character!
When two of their number start receiving a psychic distress call from beneath the ocean, the Animorphs must embrace multiple new animal forms in order to search the deeps. If they succeed, they may win a new ally in the struggle against the malevolent Yeerk. If they fail, they may lose their lives, and doom our planet to devastation. Thankfully these kids are good under pressure!
This remains a fun YA SF series, though I can definitely see some sombre notes peeking through. There's a reasonably convincing sense of danger, too, which I appreciate: the Yeerks and their minions may be thwarted for now, but they don't come across as hopelessly inept by any means.

I love Cassie's relationship with animals. And exploring the ocean world was amazing. The dolphins, whales, and even sharks were a fascinating study.

This is the first book from Cassie's perspective and it was vital to hear more from her. Cassie was good friends with Rachel before becoming an Animorph, and they compliment each other in many ways. Rachel is quick to anger and eager to fight, while Cassie knows how to calm the group down, values careful planning and is often first to notice if something is wrong.
The Animorphs often meet at Cassie's because she lives on a farm well outside of town surrounded by woods and fields. Cassie's parents are both vets, her mom works at the zoo and her father works from home as an animal rehabilitator. Cassie's family has owned the farm since the Civil War and Cassie grew up hearing stories of her family's close ties to the land. Cassie's affinity for animals is given as a reason why she is a natural at morphing. She is reluctant to admit any superiority and it was nice to see Cassie grapple with becoming a leader and gain confidence during this book.
Tobias and Cassie have both had the same dream. A voice is calling to them from the ocean asking for help. is it a message they can trust? If it is what they think it is will the Controllers get there first?
The ocean mission is an early highlight of the books, with the group planning a complicated and dangerous method of getting out into the deep ocean and also be back in time for supper. This is also where the Animorphs contemplate for the first time the ethics of acquiring an animal's DNA and then suppressing that creature's mind to use the body. What is the difference between what they do and what the Yeerks are? This comes up as the group ponders morphing into dolphins for the mission.
Also, Cassie and Jake have moved into like-like territory - he has a picture of her on his desk. Awww.
