Completely not like the blurb on GR. A lot of things get in the way of the story - takes a while to get going, a few clichèd characters, the Asian girl is whitewashed IMO (but she's got lots of tattoos, man...), an attempt at social commentary, too much "telling" and not enough "showing". Some really nice art and colors though. Very violent. (Someone at the GN discussion group mentioned a "Harry Potter" vibe with the secret school thing but then we never spend any time there to see how the school truly operates)

Given the character introduced at the end of the volume I am interested in checking out Vol 2 to see where it goes.

My mistake was picking this up because I saw Lana Condor on the cover.

Spoiler I gave this book a chance even though it's outside my genre of choice. I love graphic novels, and this really did sound intriguing.

Whoever told the creators that beastiality was a vice worthy of including for their villain lied. Did he give a whole speech about it too????? What a terrible flex.

Delete this from my memory please.

I really enjoyed this comic. not inly is it beautiful, it's fucking dark and I love dark shit. The depression that Marcus feels is something I can resonate with so easily and if anything that made me engrossed in the story. I actually felt I was a second body in this issue, as if I was there myself.

The art is incredible for me, the black and white tones with touches of colour really highlighted the type of story that is being portrayed.

The reason this is not 5 stars is because there were times where I got lost and wasn't sure where I was or where things were going. But I soon got back on track.

I really want to be in this world, and I need Saya in my life!

I’ll confess that this graphic novel just barely makes the cut as a pick for me. The artwork works so well, and the colorist deserves a lot of credit, too (the editor’s letter at the beginning praises him, and rightly so). Story wise, I’m not sure how much I buy into the setting. It’s like Hogwarts but nothing supernatural and next-to-no development in this first volume (six issues). I hope volume two will explore the school more.

Another thing that made this fun is when the story is set. Marcus is a freshman in high school during the fall of 1987. I was, too.

Welp, I read the entire Vol. 1 in about 24 hours. Though the premise is high school for assassins, there’s a lot we can recognize here: cliques, the desire to fit in, the desire for revenge, liking someone out of your league— if that isn’t high school, I don’t know what is! Looking forward to reading the rest of the volumes and watching the upcoming Syfy series!
