I liked it, didn’t love it. There were details like her broken arm and characters like Mike that just conveniently disappeared from the story after their purpose was served. I flipped back thinking I missed something regarding the timeline because they had talked about how long it would be before her cast comes off and then it’s never spoken of again. I guess I expected some sort of brief mention or cheesy celebration or something once it finally got removed since it marked the night they first spoke to each other. I would have loved to get some chapters from Calvin to hear his perspective. Or for the story to include more from Mike. Why wasn’t he invited when everyone came over to share stories and information about Holland with Calvin? That would have been a great opportunity to incorporate more information about Calvin. Then the last chunk of the novel felt like a lot of events were manufactured purely for the sake of drama. I started skimming through these later sections to get through them quicker, especially because there was a level of predictability to them.
Marriage of convenience stories are always interesting to me. Putting notions of romance aside, it speaks to the pragmatic ways that marriage actually plays out in really life. This one was a little unrealistic but nonetheless. The immigration piece added another novel front. Beside that, I couldn’t really connect with the musical obsession that unpinned that relationship. Overall, it was a good romance with some twists that did add suspense to the storyline!
It was insta Love and I didn't connect with the characters or the story at all.

It started with lots of red flags but continued with lesser. I totally loved Calvin for numerous reasons including I found the accent very appealing. Long story short it is a mediocre romcom with an unique trope but still enjoyable and entertaining

I don’t usually review these light hearted rom coms but I really enjoyed this, especially compared to other recent subpar romance books I’ve read. The fake dating trope was still clever and the characters felt interesting. I also cared about Holland’s internal thoughts and her growth. It wasn’t the same thing over and over and over. And the chemistry between Calvin and Holland was fun and natural and creative. Really loved how Calvin was just as supportive of holland’s musical ear as she was of his talents. The authors created enough layers that weren’t all emotional layers btw the MCs; the secondary characters added depth and connection.
Have you ever started a book and wondered "is this book ever going to end?" That is how I felt reading Roomies.
Holland Bakker works at a theater were her uncle's husband works. For months she has been obsessed with a street musician she's dubbed Jack. Turns out Jack's name is actually Calvin.
The synopsis pretty much tells what this story is about. While this story had potential to be really good, the main character, Holland, really prevented that from happening. She was the most insecure person, and frankly lost 25-year old person I've read in a while. And we only get Holland's view in this book. It honestly would have been better to hear from Calvin, especially when he got his big break.
The best characters in this story were Holland's uncles, and they were secondary. I didn't feel much of a connection to either character, and the events with Calvin's family at the end of the book didn't make much sense.
This book was about 150 pages too long and IT DID NOT HAVE AN EPILOGUE. There were some issues brought up at the end that were not resolved; that was incredibly frustrating.
Overall, this book was just blah. I skipped so much because I was bored and just wanted it to be over.
I would skip.
