a murder mystery that also talks about cults?? truly my type of book! I was hooked from the start with this plot and really enjoyed the past and present tense chapters that helped me learn more about the characters. the ending was a little predictable but overall, I really enjoyed this book!

A brother and sister are reconnecting at a desert resort. They escaped the cult they grew up in and a documentary about the cult is being made. I was really intrigued by the premise, but the execution fell flat for me. I wish there had been great descriptions of the desert and the resort, but it was very minimal. The story starts off on Day 6 of the trip and eventually goes back and tells you about the prior days, which I didn't care for. There are flashbacks to life in the cult, but not a lot of information on what the cult believed and how it ran, I wish there was more. I saw the twist coming, just overall disappointed.

ThTroubled couple, luxe desert resort, and then boom: murder. The past-cult storyline added a whole other layer of tension and kept me second-guessing everything. Frida’s inner conflict felt so real, and the way the story moved between timelines made the mystery unfold in such a satisfying (and stressful!) way. It’s a slow burn in places, but totally worth the ride. Perfect if you like your thrillers with emotional depth and a side of desert noir.

i was very disappointed with this one! the twist was very predictable. i loved “the quiet tenant,” but this was a huge letdown for me :( i wish the cult was expanded on more bc that seemed to have shaped the characters’ pasts so much.

Good premise, but the book never takes off. Too much time spent on things that don’t really matter and not enough on parts that could’ve used more buildup or detail.
