Whisper of Sin was a fun little interlude that introduced the story of Ria and Emmett. Ria is human and Emmett is part of the DarkRiver Leopard pack. When Ria is nearly raped and beaten up by a gang who are trying to take over downtown San Francisco, Emmett and the DarkRiver pack step in to apprehend the criminals.

This book is set before the main series and is the first introduction to the Psy-Changeling series. It introduces how the DarkRiver Leopard's are beginning to asset their dominance against the Psy in San Francisco and show that they won't be messed with. I think it's more enjoyable to have read this after reading several books in the series as you already have a feel for the world, the characters and the mood which makes the novella very easy to fall into. Without having read the main series, there wouldn't be much in terms of your understanding of the Psy-Changeling relationships.

I liked Ria and Emmett as characters, but as always with short novellas I find it hard to really connect with the characters and their relationship. Singh did stick strongly to her characterisation and focus on real relationships and family dynamics which I liked a lot. She still managed to flesh out the relationships and the storyline between Ria and Emmett (if a bit quick) fairly well for 88 pages.

If you want a short fun and flirty read with a decent sub-plot, then you'd definitely find this here. However, I think you'd benefit from reading this in tandem with the wider series, or at least after the first book where you've been introduced to more of the characters. Overall, an enjoyable read and one I devoured in a lunch-time sitting!

I loved Emmett with his alpha and protective qualities. I also loved Ria because she could handle herself, especially at the beginning of the novella. This was a great start to the Psy/Changeling series.

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Psy/Changeling series, but this could be read as a standalone.

Would I recommend this novella? Yes. If you are looking at reading Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series, Beat of Temptation and Whisper of Sin would be the perfect start.

This can be found on my blog too:

I'm not sure if we got to know Ria before Mine to Possess but my first memory of her is when Talin met with her in the office. Ria helped Talin understand that anyone can be a member of the pack and was so genuinely nice that I liked her immediately. You can imagine my surprise (and happiness) when I realized that she and her DarkRiver leopard boyfriend, Emmett have already have a novella.

I didn't love these two characters as much as all the others but they were still very likable. It was great to read about Ria and Emmett but unfortunately the story felt a bit rushed, still it was pretty well written. I liked that there were many characters introduced all at once but I never got confused, I even started to like some of the other characters.

All considered Whisper of Sin wasn't as good as Beat of Temptation but it was still nice to learn more about Ria.

The story idea: 3/5
The realization of the story: 4/5
The characters: 3,5/5
The cover: 3/5
Final Rating: 3/5

You need padded walls and Jesus.

What is there to say? All there is to Ria and Emmett's love is insane attraction, which is lazy writing for what's supposed to be a goddamn romance novel. With this and #0.5, my paranormal romance journey is off to a terrible start. I would honestly rather live out my days in Tartarus than be pursued by one of these DarkRiver jokesters, who seem like utter fucking nightmares. What does DarkRiver even mean? Like a polluted river? It kind of sounds like an edgy computer virus created by the shadowy big business villain of a Netflix original that'll get a cult following but cruelly cancelled after its third season.

Anyway now I'm going to read the first full-length novel, but if it proves a disappointment I owe it to my sanity to bow out of this genre. Or at least this series.

Great novella

I’m quickly falling for this series, and I haven’t even read the first novel yet! In the DarkRiver leopard pack, Emmet is one of the soldiers as well as an engineer for DarkRiver Construction. One day, he and Dorian come across Ria and help rescue her (she already had fought back) from an attempted rape, and from that moment Emmet realizes she’s his mate. What follows is Emmet and the DarkRiver pack working to eliminate the threat posed to San Francisco by Vincent’s Crew and keep Ria and her family safe when she got away from one of their underlings that first time.

Sometimes I did feel the pacing was a little fast and things felt rather abrupt, but overall I still really enjoyed this and I love getting to know all the members of DarkRiver. There was a throwaway homomisic comment made that jerked me out of the story, but I’m still really excited to see more of this universe!
