That was definitely an interesting and different point of view. It's still weird to me that I've been to so many of the places mentioned in the book and didn't know about how they connected to Dahmers life.

A friend shared this with me. Not sure I would have ever really sought it out otherwise. I avoided reading it for awhile knowing it was about a serial killer (and since Dahmer was a tad before my time, I didn't really know what he did).

I appreciated how human the work was... and also how well researched it was. I didn't read everything in the footnotes so closely (but I read most of it), but I appreciated Backderf's journalist bent re: being clear about source material.

What a story.

Not sure that I'm not going to ever be able to read Backderf's other work without a tinge of serial killer energy, though.

"Where were the damn adults?"

So, "friend" may be a bit of a generous term her for the relationship between the author and Dahmer, but it's not like My Acquaintance Dahmer would be a winning title. Overall, this was a fascinating and surprisingly sad read. Could all of the horrific crimes Dahmer eventually committed have been prevented if someone actually paid attention to how troubled of a teen he was? Backderf certainly thinks so, and makes a compelling case to prove his point.

If I were to rate this graphic memoir solely on the story—it would have been a 5 star read. I particularly urge you NOT to skip the "Notes" section at the end, as it details the sources of each episode presented in the book, and provides a lot of insight and context. However, I'm taking a star off for the art style because it just wasn't my thing. I realize this is very much a matter of personal taste, but it's a large part of any graphic novel experience, so I can't just ignore it.
