This book is SOOOOOO AMAZING! I've been wanting to read this for a while and finally got to for a school project. This book can be related to and read by people of all types. It uses the N-word a few times as well as some cuss words, but it's not super bad. It's also a super heart-breaking story about a young girl who struggles with the death of her friend, police brutality, gang violence, relationships, and her identity around specific people. She feels like she can't always be her true self around certain people.

I'll get the deduction out of the way first, I'm not normally someone to hate on HP references (I used to be the opposite), but there really were just too many in this book.

Okay now that aside this book was 🔥🔥🔥 I can absolutely see why it's been banned and challenged so much, and it's absolutely one that NEEDS to be read. I wish I would've read it as a young adult because it would've been wildly eye opening. I also think there are a lot of people who would see themselves in many of the characters.

i won't lie, i HATE reading a digital book so my reading experience was somewhat different than i would have liked it to be but this book is, was, and will continue to be incredibly powerful! i will always always always value an honest depiction of race and what it feels like to be a black girl in a pwi and the plight of starr and khalil is so emotional i just felt so connected to the book
