Absolutely loved this Cinderella retelling and thought it was spectacular. We have a world where women are second-class citizens and are expected to follow in Cinderella’s footsteps to find true love at the ball and make her future husband happy forever. The men have all the power. The girls have 3 chances to go to the ball and usually if they are not picked on the second chance, they were sent away to work. It was important to look your best for the ball and to attempt to get a good husband, but there are issues that the parents of the girl must agree to the exchange of their daughter and fees must be exchanged. We follow Sophia who is upset and enraged with how their kingdom is run, she wants to change. She thinks the ball is stupid and is frankly not interested in marrying a man, but instead a woman. Well, we join Sophia in her attempt to change the kingdom and dethrone the king.
I thought this was an amazing book and loved how the fairytale was mixed in with the misogynistic kingdom. I figured out pretty quickly what our villain was doing to extend their life, but I did not figure out how or why it was that way. I think this was a good solid 4 star read for me because I was able to find some of the plot patterns. I definitely think this would make a fabulous movie. Definitely recommend this book!

A wonderful fast-paced fantasy centred around a retelling/reimagining of the classic tale of Cinderella. I liked the short chapters and it was easy to read.

I found the plot too predictable and the characters incomplete. I think I might come back to it one day just to finish it, I was just frustrated that the plot had so much potential and it didn’t live up to my expectations.

I’m usually not a fan of fantasy novels or fairytale retellings, but when I heard this book was a dark feminist spin on the famous Cinderella fairytale I knew I had to read it.

First of all, can we appreciate how gorgeous the cover is? *chef’s kiss*

Imagine Cinderella but make it dark, twisted, adventurous, with BIPOC characters and sapphic.

This one is for the  girls who want to marry the princess rather than the prince charming and for the ones who want to be their own knight in shining armor.

It’s a retelling that does an awesome job at portraying issues like the patriarchy and nice guy concept, as well as tying in other fairytales in the same universe, and emphasizing that stories can be manipulated by people and twisted over time.

As someone who is not really into fantasy I really liked the fast pace of the book and how it didn’t spend too much time in world building.

I read some reviews that said the plot was predictable and although I have to agree that it didn’t surprise me, seing a BIPOC, sapphic and feminist main character in that role, fighting for what she wants and being unapologetic about that was refreshing.

Most of all, I love the spin that the author gave to such iconic characters such as the fairy godmother and prince charming.
