I wanted to love this book but in the end I felt let down by such a good concept.

The Good

• Diverse characters
• LGBTQ+
• Took place 200 after Cinderella
• The fairy godmother
• The true story of Cinderella 
• Admitting that with a world like this it would be hard to change, no easy fix

The Bad

• Insta-love 
• Characters introduced then disappear 
• Characters not living up to potential (Luke specifically)
• The twist with the fairy godmother's relationship to the king (wasn't needed)
• Lack of subtly 
• No reason for Manford to be the way he is 
• It was all tell and no shows 
• Magic was simply convenient to the plot and not really built into the world 
• The end made it seem like a simple fix

I loved the concept and the characters so deeply. I agree that I would have loved more world building; to see more behind the curtain but also see more of the lives of people in Lille. However, I think we got just enough for the story to get us right where we needed to be. Especially considering it is a fairytale that most people have heard or known for most of their lives. I thought the writing was brilliant and beautiful; you could feel the longing and bravery in each line.

Really loved this dark retelling and all the woven bits of the classic story as key plot points. also the queer storyline and the smashing the patriarchy message was stellar!

Absolutely loved it!!
I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, would have loved one final chapter just to conclude it all a bit more. 
Loved the character interactions and plot, the ending was both surprising and predictable (if that makes sense), loved it regardless. 
It would be really nice to see a sequel, maybe based on other areas that were brought up that we also based on fairy tales!
