I'm re-reading the Kate Daniels series, and I think I'm enjoying it even more the second time through. I think it helps having finished the whole series and just knowing and loving these characters and this world. The one thing I didn't like about this one was how quickly Kate started calling Julie "her kid". It's like, she met this girl two days ago and wants to protect her (I get that), but she's all "they took my kid". It was just too much, too fast.

Original review:
Started so slow that I began to wonder if I wanted to just quit this series. But it got better and better, and I loved the epilogue. I'm definitely not quitting.

I really enjoyed the book. The background of the story started to make a little more sense to me. I enjoyed the plot and characters. I even liked how Corran played around with Kate. We also learn more about her background and who she is. I appreciate that this story doesn't make it seem like she's bumbling through things. Shes smart and yes she's learning but she always figures it out and finds a way to help those around her. Im excited for the next book.

Edit review: I did a reread and listened to the graphic audio and I think I enjoyed that even more. Sometimes the authors get long winded and WAY too descriptive and I think the graphic audio help my frustration with that.

This book was a good solid second book to the series and I felt much more connected to the characters in this one than the first. Kate is still badass and I loved the aspect of her trying to take care of a kid amongst hellish situations. Her humor has become stronger in this one and I loved the ending battle scene and how she handled it.

Curran is just a rolling ball of rage and hotness. He even had a few places where I was grinning and laughing because of what he said. His protective nature came out a lot more in this book for many reasons and I was happy to learn more about the Shapeshifters.

The plot of the book wasn't really the same as the first, but there are still underlying currents that can be explored in later books, but this specific plot was more engaging and easier to follow, I think, than the first book.

Overall I highly enjoyed this book and can't wait to pick up the third.

This is the second book in the Kate Daniels series and... I'm not really feeling it. A lot of that has to do with Curran and his alpha male douchebaggery. I just want to knock him over the skull with something blunt shaped and heavy. Am I supposed to give a fig that he like-likes Kate? Like, OMG, a man lowered himself to bring food to a woman! *gasp*swoon*gag* Give me a break.

The plot here also didn't make much sense, and boy is there a lot of plot going on in this book. It's very busy and felt overstuffed as a result. And I'll be honest, I lost track of the plot in a few places and couldn't really be bothered to go back and find out how things proceeded from one point to another. And then there are the Fomorians and Morrigan, which was not done nearly as well as it was in A Wizard Abroad, so that certainly didn't help matters. And the whole concept of magic falling and dropping and having flares or whatnot just wasn't really explained very well.

There was some interesting stuff though. I liked Julie and Andrea, and Derrick continues to amuse me. I was tickled by the fact that if shapeshifters and vampires existed in the real world, there would be laws dictating what they can and can't do, because of course there would be. This is America, where we have a law for everything. Want to be a vampire? Just fill out this stack of forms in triplicate, blue or black ink only. :P

I'm not sure how much the narration has to do with my reaction here either. I did like the narration well enough for the first book, and it was certainly adequate here. But there's no denying that the narrator is pretty limited in her voices, especially for the men. If I do decide to read the next one, I think I'll check the book out from the library and read it to see if that makes a difference.
