What a fun read, especially about halfway through. I'm not sure if it needs a sequel as I'm satisfied with how it ended, but I'll still read it eventually.
as soon as rake got his own chapters I cared about him way more than anybody else he was just so cool. I wish there was a little more connection between the mermaid, witch, and sea sections, because the witch warns Flora about using her power too soon and then everyone just forgets about that whole chapter of their life and nothing actually comes of it. In some ways it felt like the author had like four different ideas for a story and shoved them all together into one book, which was a lot. Overall it was entertaining though.
Sweet story and I LOVED the ending! But for as much as was put into world building, I thought the development of the lore was a little thin.

It's not that it was boring. It's that the plot made no sense and was like: _____/\_____/\_/\_______ . As in, a lot of times, and during a lot of pages, NOTHING happened. And when something did happen it was... predictable?
I won't say I did not like the book, because I did but I expected so much more from it. Social medias sold me this book with "there's pirates, mermaids, witches and it's gay" so obviously I had to read it. But it did not live up to the hype and I'm disappointed.
Here are a few things that bothered me : 1) the romance wad extremely fast. 100 pages in, maybe 50-70 pages after they met and the two girls are already in love and ready to die for each other. We didn't see any evolution, it was just BOUM. they're together. 2) literally 100-150 pages of the book were unnecessary as it said absolutely nothing we needed to know. 3) the different parts are confusing imo. 4) the pace is soooooo slow. like, extremely slow
But the end is cute, Rafe is a great character, and the world building was great too. We could've had maybe a bit more on the Emperor and his imperialism or more on what happened to certain characrers but other than that it was okay.

My kid asked me to read this and I can see why they like it. But I am too old to identify with stubborn teens, and I ended up finding the conclusion fairly unsatisfying, as only a couple of the plots resolved, and the characters I was more interested in were left dangling, possibly for the sequel. But YA needs more genderqueer lesbian content so that gets a hell yes from me.
