This engaging read is one part sophisticated mystery and one part literary examination of the bonds of family and those with whom you share a hometown. The result is a tale that keeps you turning pages to find out what happens next but also invites you to linger over Unger's examination of human weaknesses, relationships, and what matters in the end.

This is the first novel I have read by Lisa Unger and I thought it was good, but not great. It follows the story of detective Jones Cooper and his wife Maggie who is a psychologist. Trouble begins when their son's girlfriend goes missing. While searching for the missing girl, the past gets pieced together, little by little. The past and present intermingle in this story of tragedy and secrets.

I think Unger does have a talent for writing suspense. The main thing that was problematic for me was that there were so many things going on that I got confused often. There were so many characters to keep up with and so many side stories to understand, it got a little complicated... All the characters' lives were interlaced with each other somehow. I won't begin to explain all the relationships, because I don't think I could. I don't like having to stop reading and figure out who knows who, and how, and, what part do they play in the story again? I think it would have been better if there weren't so many characters to keep up with, some I wonder why they were in the story at all.

The basic plot was good, but nothing amazing or unheard of. It was a little lengthy, although at the beginning I was completely hooked. I would suggest this novel for someone who likes crime novels, but I would say not to expect too much. For me, it is one of those books that was good, but not great; enjoyable but forgettable.

This was the first ebook I read and initially I couldn't wait to continue reading each night. However, getting to about 75% it started to drag a bit for me. I enjoyed the twists and all, but was a bit over the constant switching between people's perspectives. For me there was a bit too much embellishment going on about the characters too, but I probably didn't have enough patience. Overall, a nice and easy read. 3 out of 5 stars for me.

I really enjoyed this book even though I felt like it took forever for me to read it. I do look forward to reading the rest of this series. I would definitely recommend this book!

A mystery in the Hollows..it was ok.  It felt a little unsatisfying at the end..but it was an interesting path to get there.

I wanted to read this book for a long time so I finally decided to get the audiobook. The storyline was okay, way too many characters to keep track in my mind when only listening every so often. Also, not sure if the book is better, but in the audiobook it seems like it switches from past to present, and from one character to another from one paragraph to the next. This was confusing...I need to listen a few minutes before knowing which character it was or if it was a memory or present time.

I do not recommend it as an audiobook.

Decent storyline that kept my interest, however around having 50 pages left I was struggling to finish because I didn’t feel much more needed to be said or explained. The writing is nice and I enjoyed the character development!
