Carlos Hernandez once again delivers a hilarious and heartfelt story with Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe, sequel in his SFF Middle Grade Sal & Gabi series. These books provide a much needed sensitive boy protagonist in Sal Vidón. One of the reasons I’ve loved this series so much is because of how vulnerable this kid is allowed to be. He makes mistakes, learns to verbalize his grief, and also learns what it means to take personal responsibility for his actions. I wish all adults could be just as supportive as the ones written by Hernandez. They are always understanding, yet firm, helpful, but never overbearing. Gabi remains the most relatable to this reformed know-it-all child (slightly reformed?). I love how determined and ambitious she is. She is always in someone’s business with the very best intentions (mostly). I loved that Hernandez shows the value of found family and how these bonds can be just as powerful as the ones you are born into. Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe was just as much fun as its predessor while also expanding the Sal & Gabi multiverse. Please tell me there is a chance for more novels because I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters.
I read this book as an E ARC from netgalley. While I enjoyed this book quite a bit , for some reason I didn’t love it as much as the first one. Maybe it simply boils down to expectations... Sal encounters a Gabi from another universe (Fix Gabi) that tries to convince Sal that what his Papi is doing to fix the multiverse is actually ruining it. As Sal tries to figure out what is going on, he encounters challenges with “his” Gabi, Yasmany, and Papi and others. A good solid read!

This was so, so, so great. It had as much humour as the first book, and was also equally sincere and heartwarming and friendship-y, and Sal and Gabi continue to be wonderful characters and wonderful friends, and everyone around them is so supportive and caring; I loved everyone, including the very ethical sentient toilet.
I also so, so appreciate that we have a boy and a girl being friends without any romance between them whatsoever, and that Sal doesn't care one bit about romance in general (at one point Gabi says about Sal, "If you were any more aro, I'd shoot you out of a bow", which made my aromantic self giggle). Plus, I always love seeing kids with chronic illnesses in books, as I used to be one myself (the illness is still here; the kidness not so much, ha) and longed to see kids like myself in books.
This is easily one of my favourite books of the year, just like the first one was last year, and I very much hope that there will be a third book.

This series is so fun & engaging for middle school teenagers and late tweeners. Hernandez gets these readers and makes them laugh out loud! His books are super fun to read with lots of cliff-hanging endings to chapters and it’s hard to quit for the evening. We are huge fans of Sal and Gabi at our house! My guy thought the 2nd one was as fun as the first.
