A very cute, but sized book about trees, the inner workings of them, how they are important and all of those fun things. Even learned some new stuff too. If you like trees, I recommend a listen or read.

Wohlleben's prose is charming and makes the trees' life utterly fascinating and enchanting. Very lovely. But it does make one despair...just when you thought you had safely reduced your carbon footprint and eliminated any harm to animals that you might have been causing through your diet, along comes Peter Wohlleben to let us know that trees, just like animals, are people too. And, just like animals, we are destroying their habitat...you see it turns out that trees in urban environments or in managed forests are markedly different creatures than trees in an undisturbed virgin forest. Humans are doing harm everywhere we turn. It is enough to make one sit down and weep and give up all hope of ever doing enough to mitigate the evil of our species existence. Treebeard would delight in Peter Wohlleben and would drink long draughts with him while talking endlessly about the growth of trees. I think they would have much in common.

To be honest, I only made it through half the book before I had to return it to the library. It was very interesting and held my attention for awhile, but became repetitive, or perhaps the information needed more theming to my ear - it’s possible by listening to the audiobook I lost a bit of that chapter organization. He anthropomorphizes a lot, which was quaint to start but by the half way point I was ready for more science. The language is very accessible, so I would recommend this if you’re into trees and nature.

The audiobook was calming to listen to. It was very informative but not a big deal if you zoned out a little too.

I don't often read/listen to non-fiction other than memoirs, but I enjoyed listening to this book about our forests and how trees communicate. Walking in the woods is my happy place and this book gave me food for thought. The chapter on mycelium blew me away! I'm interested in reading more by Peter Wohlleben.
