I enjoyed this much more than the first book honestly.
Did not enjoy this book as. Much as I did the first, but still a fun read and enjoyed the characters’ continuing stories and new intrigues of the rich and powerful.
This is the continuing story of Lakshmi from the Henna Artist. In this second book, she is married to Dr. Kumar, and assisting him with patients using herbal medicine in Shimla. Shimla is one day journey from Jaipur.
Lakshmi sends Malik her "adopted" son to apprenticeship under the direction of Manu Agrawal. The Agrawal's adopted Nikhil in infancy. He was born to Radha, Lakshmi's younger sister, from a relationship with Ravi Singh.
The novel begins with the collapse of a movie theater and an investigation that ensues. It takes the love of gold, and the corruption of construction industry and blends it a very sweet story.
The only reason I gave this a three star rating is because inconsistencies based on the time period and certain cultural norms. Most people reading this story wouldn't know but since I lived in Shimla and am familiar with Indian culture, it kept jarring my reading of the story.

Beautiful writing with details that make you feel like you are in that time period. I didn’t bond with the characters as much as the Henna Artist, but I will read the 3rd book on this series and I look forward to it. This author has a way of really tugging at your heart strings!
I had recently read The Henna Artist and wanted to immediately jump into this book because I loved it so much. I really love these characters, and it was lovely to read about Malik as a young man and how Lakshimi's life evolved after moving to Shimla. Really great read, not sure I loved the mystery that was trying to be solved, but glad integrity was upheld. Really love Joshi's writing and how her upbringing, food and family influences it and the lessons I get to learn from reading it.

20 hours of flying later … loved this second installment and Malik as the main character! (✈️MIA-LHR-BLR)
I enjoyed this book, but it did feel a bit too coincidental. I loved Malik in the first book, so it was fun to see him grown up.
Unfortunately didn’t enjoy as much as the first one but still good! It was a very slow burn, a lot of unnecessary repetition in details through out the book and the story didn’t have as much of a hook.
