While I didn’t like the ending, I enjoyed this book far more than any other work by Stephanie Meyer. Her protagonist was well-developed and unique.

2.5 stars.

Entertaining and unpredictable!

What a pleasant surprise. I thought it would be good but it was even better than I imagined! I love how it ended. Like it was a wild twist but one I was here for.

It starts out slow and is kind of boring at first but when it picks up the pace and gets going it’s hard to stop listening to. The slow start is the only reason it’s not 5 stars for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Detailed review to come hopefully soon. 4.75 stars

An out of the box style romance with plenty of action and adventure. Meyer knows how to weave a tale of lovers that rings true to Romeo and Juliet, never meant to be together, but still hold a more modern energy that any reader can enjoy.

The downside is this feel that, as is set by her other works, Meyer's texts tend to be made into films and this book especially is written with that clear intention. Places where she could be concise and just give one or two sentences to describe an outfit or new environment is given detailed paragraphs, almost as if she wants to document her image for any film director in the future. Unfortunately, this often makes her work long winded and a lot for the reader to take in.

The piece itself it one of Meyer's longest works at a little over 500 pages. With that comes a long lull in the middle of the plot in which the romance really builds but the action all but comes to a stand still. Worth it to push through to the ending but not all readers are that determined.

Overall, a solid read and great text from Meyer and surely a step up into a more adult world in comparison to her more Young Adult novels. If one is willing to push through the mass details and lull for romance well worth it for the unique characters and storyline.

I'm glad I read this book. I rolled my eyes when it was recommended to me... Stephanie Meyer? The Twilight author? I'll pass!

I now have great respect for Meyer---not only is this a captivating book with clever writing, she has taken on the spy genre after vampires and aliens. That kind of breadth and diversity is admirable. The amount of thorough research and thoughtfulness put into this book is dually impressive and has convinced me to try other spy novels, an entire genre that I was convinced was "not me" !

This definitely wasn't a romance novel, btw. There was some gushy scenes but it wasn't the breathy goop I'd have expected (the little I know about Twilight) based on reputation. It wraps up a little too neatly and bores at times (and it won't make my top 10 this year) but I'm thankful for the exposure and reminder that reputations are not always fact.

A fun plot, but so much didn't make any sense at all. Still a better romance that Twilight :)

DNF at 95%, but I wanted to DNF at about 50%. Only finished for book club. This was very juvenile, even referred to the villain as “the bad guys”. Thriller with no twists, no thrills, just nothing. FMC has some cool skills, but no character development. Love interest was way too insta-lovely.
