Grave Secret

Charlaine Harris

3.78 AVERAGE

This is the final book in the Harper Connelly series. Ultimately I found the whole thing pretty depressing. Harper the human cadaver dog and her pock-marked brother/lover Tolliver meet small-town prejudices wherever they go, ponder their hard-luck childhood and try to reconnect with their sisters. It's tiresome to read about.
Grave Secret has its own monster-of-the-week mystery as well as dealing with the ongoing question of what happened to Harper's missing sister Cameron. As this is the conclusion of the series, the Cameron conundrum is solved. It's hard to say which of these storylines feels more tacked-on, as the central event of the book is Tolliver being shot. Page after page is taken up with blather about how weak he looks and how he'll be looked after when he leaves the hospital. Why bother with an intriguing mystery when you've got an injury to write about! Gah!

I don't really have much to say for a review. I love Charlaine Harris, and am incredibly sad that this series is coming to an end. I am happy that she spoke to the lives of the main characters after the series has ended. She also concluded the subplot for all the books - Harper and Tolliver's sister, and her disappearance.

I would just like to say that the ending for her sister somehow seemed wrong. Perhaps I'm just too much of an optimist, or I haven't read enough true crime lately, but I? didn't find the ending to be plausible.

Another great book from Charlaine Harris! This book brings to the end the Harper Connelly series, and it wraps everything up nicely. In the beginning I had no clue were this one was going, and by the middle I was confused about the connection between two (seemingly) separate mysteries, and by the end it all made sense. I'm not ashamed to say that I am sorry to see this series end. I enjoyed the evolving relationship between Harper and Tolliver, and I thought the whole series was well written, with interesting plots.

The mystery of Harper's sister Cameron's disappearance is finally solved in this last book of the series and it's something I wasn't expecting...

Harper and Tolliver's latest case takes them back to Texas and many unpleasant memories, as well as the unwelcome news that Tolliver's dad Matthew is finally out of prison and wants to reconnect.

Their case reveals something that the rich family was not expecting to find and someone is unhappy enough to

. Harper is on her own and in danger and she needs to find out who wants them dead and why before they succeed.

It turns out that
Spoilertheir rich client Lizzie's long time boyfriend Chip and Lizzie's brother Drex had killed her grandfather and tried to hide the fact that Chip had a baby with their housekeeper and got rid of the baby so many years ago.

When they failed to keep the truth from coming out, and after Chip discovered that he was dying from cancer, he wanted the truth to come out and take his accomplish with him. He admitted that they were responsible for shooting Tolliver and killing their private investigator friend, as well as the police officer who was protecting Harper, and then Chip killed Drex before killing himself.

While they helped solve a part of the mystery, Harper and Tolliver still had to confront Matthew, who confirmed that they were right that he had swapped the babies in an ill-conceived scheme to blackmail the rich people at some future point. What none of them realized was that Mark also knew about the swap, and so did Cameron, who discovered the truth and confided in the wrong person before going to the police...

Mark, wanting to protect his father, killed her before she could, and had been keeping her body in a storage shed away from anywhere Harper could find it.

.

It's not exactly an "all's well that ends well" story, but Harper and Tolliver do manage to finally put the past behind them and

, before going back to their lives and unusual job.

I really enjoy this trip to visit with Harper and Tolliver's family.

I initially read this book before I used Goodreads and that is what the rating is from.

7/8-7/9/2024 audiobook

When I started reading this book, I didn't realize it was the last book. I'm disappointed because I like the series. I wish it could continue. I really enjoy the concept of Harper helping people find out how their relatives/friends have died. Glad they got closure to the death of their sister.

I thought this was a really good ending to the series. From what I heard this is supposed to be the last in the series, but I could be wrong. Charlaine Harris' writing always sucks me in and this was no different. I'm kind of sad it's over, but at least it helped my Charlaine Harris fix until the next Sookie Stackhouse book comes out.

After years of searching Harper and Tolliver finally find out what happened to their sister. I think this is the best book in the series. In brinks closure to everything. But it is also the most sinister because of all the secrets revealed.
