A fun collection of stories focused on strong women in world history. This reminds me a lot of the Women in Science but what I appreciated was the greater level of diversity present. This is definitely because the scope wasn’t a limited but I kind of ended anticlimactic for it. The second to last story was about the current life of Mae Jemison; the first African American female astronaut. This was a really strong strong experience and very motivational of a woman who is still alive that young girls could still look up to. I thought this was how the book ended and I was very pleased until I realized that the actual final story was by Peggy Guggenheim. She had an incredible life but I don’t feel like it was as inspirational as the previous and causes me to not end the book on as high of a note. I did really enjoy the wide variety of class levels, time periods and cultures/ethnicities being portrayed in the book. These are great resources for young women to gain access to because of the opportunities of inspiration and finding a new role model. Would definitely be interested in reading more from the author.

Swoon swoon swoon swoon. I love this so much. So many ladies who might not normally get included in compilations like this (TOVE JANSSON!!!!!!), and I want to learn more about all of them. I adore Bagieu's artwork and her irreverent tone and the paintings between comics, which are so lovely I want to frame them all and hang them up in my house. Also, I don't speak French but I think she just illustrated a GN version of "The Witches" by Roald Dahl? Be still my heart.

I was poking around trying to find out if there would be a volume two of this and found this on Wikipedia:

"The work was released In English as one volume with the title Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World. The English version has only 29 stories instead of the original 30, as "Phoolan Devi, the Indian Queen of Bandits" was removed because it included the rape of a ten-year-old girl by her husband.[1][2]."

Typical America, silencing true stories in case they upset someone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really can't say enough good things about this graphic novel. I learned so much! In this graphic novel, we are given little biographical profiles of amazing, inspiring women throughout history who have defied the odds.

I learned so much! From Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian actress who essentially invented GPS technology, to Frances Glessner Lee who changed the way we examine crime scenes...I was in awe the entire time I read this phenomenal book. The illustrations are also fabulous and fit in well with the tone of each passage.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves learning new aspects of history, needs a fresh done of empowerment, or just enjoys emotionally impactful graphic novels. Not to be missed!

So many of these types of books only have a brief bio per celebrant, but Bagieu gives us little stories which makes reading more enjoyable.

Wholly impressive, both the biographical storytelling and the inimitable drawings.

This is my new go-to gift for all the young women in my life.

Brazen is a non-fiction graphic novel that tells the stories of all kinds of women in history and around the world. I loved reading about each woman in this book and how they dared to live the lives they wanted in spite of sexism, racism, gender stereotyping, parental expectations, and other adversities. I loved discovering that many of the technology and inventions we have today were from women who were cast aside or rarely credited. I loved learning that many of the privileges we have now are because of women who stood up for us and themselves, because someone had to and no one else was doing it.

Each story is told in colourful comic panels lasting 3-5 pages with a 2-page spread at the end of each entry. The illustration for the spreads are so beautiful that I want to print them all and cover my walls with them. Pénélope Bagieu, author and illustrator, masterfully captures the personality of each woman, and I found myself rolling my eyes with them or chuckling at how DONE they were from all the sexist comments they had to deal with. 🙄😂

Brazen is the kind of book I needed as a teenager, the kind of book I needed now, and the kind I’ll keep needing later. This is a book that will empower, dare, and inspire and I’m so glad my friend Marion sent it to me. 💕
