3.5 stars

3.5

I couldn't get past the first few pages. The writing is wooden and amateurish.

It took me 3 weeks to finish this book. THREE WEEKS. That's pretty unheard of for me. And despite how long it took me to get through this, I'm still rating it 4 stars. It took a while to get into this book, but I think that was due to the new author having to reintroduce all the characters and set up the storyline so I'm not going to ding the book any stars because of it. And once I got used to all the new characters, I progressed through the book pretty quick.

I'm so glad that Blomkvist and Salander are back! Loved this installment and Lagercrantz did an excellent job in Larsson's voice. Well done.

Maybe 2.5 stars. This was a disappointment for me since I'm a huge fan of the other books. I wanted to love this, and I'm not even sure I liked it. Despite what it says on the cover, this is much more a "Blomkvist book" than a "Lisbeth book." The writing is fine, the narration (audiobook) was fine, and I can see the cohesiveness in style. However, the story itself was just kinda "blah." Every character seemed a little watered down, and the whole story was predictable. I kept waiting to be wrong about what I expected to happen next. But, no. I stayed up late one night finishing it, not because I was so riveted that I couldn't stop... but because I just wanted it to be over. If you decide to skip it, you're not missing anything.

So pleased to see the series continue. Happy that it's less graphically violent as well. Salander is growing up.

I had some serious trepidation about this book before I started it. The girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy is some mighty fine storytelling. Lisbeth Salander is one of the best heroines of modern literature. I wasn't sure that anyone would be able to continue this series after the author's death. So, while I was excited to read a new book in the series, I was highly doubtful that it would be the same.
The final verdict? It isn't the same. The writing feels different. You can tell that it was written by a different author. However, once Salander is back on the scene, none of that really matters anymore. She makes her entrance and keeps the book going. The story is a bit convoluted, even for a series that thrived on that. However, it is the characters that carry this one. Blomkvist and Salander and the various other entities that populate this book help keep it entertaining and engaging.
All that being said, this is still the worst of the series. There's not enough of Salander in it. The plot is a bit ridiculous and confusing. There's almost no interaction between Blomkvist and Salander. Does that make it a bad book. No, I still give it five stars although I'm willing to admit that some of that is due to my own adoration of the two main characters.
Do I want to see this series continue? I think so, yes. Although I do worry about the quality drastically dropping the more books there are. Perhaps this should be the last one? After all, the author is dead so maybe his characters should be retired and remembered as they are. I can say that I enjoyed this one and that it brought back memories of my enjoyment of the first three. Is that a high enough endorsement of it for you? You be the judge of that!
As long as Blomkvist and Salander don't ever change, sign me up for more!

Disappointing. The story is ok, the writing includes far to much unnatural and jarring dialogue. Too many hints about what would happen in each next chapter. Too much extra stylish bullshit, like clothing and sunglasses and hair and perfume. Feels like a book written with a mind to making a lame Hollywood action movie with minimal story and dialogue.
