*4.5. I liked this a lot more the second time around, mostly because I found Val Con a lot more sympathetic than he was the first time I read this. Much like last time, the Clutch Turtles are far and away the best thing about this book. Edger is my book best friend.

CW: violence throughout, nonconsensual kiss in chapter 14 (not of the two love interests), threatened rape in chapter 25 (not of the two love interests)

this is fun! I would read a story all about turtle friend or a romance novel in this universe w/out reservation.

This is the second time I have read this book. And I fell in love with it all over again. Although the title on Goodreads shows that this is the 9th of the series, this is actually the first written book in the sequence and is therefore a great place to start.

I think that one of the reasons the series appeals is because of the patterns of manners and behavior that each culture expresses. There's that undercurrent of formality and ritualized demeanor that is so familiar to those who have watched Downton Abbey or read about courtly manners in the Elizabethan age.

That being said, this is really an action/adventure novel, set in a science-fiction universe, but with the characterization of more well-rounded fantasy.

This is my “go to” book when I just need an awesome book to read. I’ve followed these authors since the very beginning! Well before the internet. From the time when you had to call bookstores looking for this book and their other material because it was out of print! I’m catching up on posting my oldie but goody books and this one is the best!

Space opera where everyone talks like they’re from the Regency era, except for when they talk like they’re from 1920s New York, which is slightly confusing. I was drawn in by the accidentally partners, will-they-won’t-they romance angle, but found the eventual payoff a little underwhelming. The rest of the plot was fun, not too predictable, and the world-building was pretty engaging but that’s probably because I don’t care that much about the “sci” part of sci-fi, and prefer the “long descriptions of the diplomatic customs of alien races” aspect. Overall, a fun way to spend a few hours.

I quite enjoyed the world building and different races, but I’m not sure I quite ever suspended my disbelief with the characters. There was just so much violence at the beginning, particularly, for me to get comfortable with their softer side, I guess.

This got better as it went along... But action at the expense of character development is never my favorite.

Can't say I enjoyed it but I didn't hate it either. The science was a little inconsistent. We have FTL spaceships but no sensors or mobile devices. A couple of amateur mistakes made by a supposed top scout and agent. The story continues in the next book but this one ends at a good stopping point.

An extremely quick and pleasant read, polished off in a day.

This is space opera without melodrama, sf light on science (no more than a handful of science-babble words tossed around, actually), and a lighthearted romance between two intelligent people in a future world that is very careful to present gender equality. Faster-than-light space travel occurs with the equivalent of Hey Presto! and some fancy-sounding labels. The assassin assassinated, yet we are given no information on why he did what he did nor the political background that warrants his profession. Social organization for two of the four species (I do not yet know about the other two) seem to be Clans, but not much exploration into either. The one true alien race spoke in flowing periods like Victorian gentlemen, with manners to match, and account for much of the low-key humor in the story.

The good guys are good and noble, the bad guys are not, but neither are they particularly evil.

All this is to say, fluffy!!! soft!!! light!!! like a cloud-soft pillow to rest a pummeled brain after a hard day. Recommended.
