This series devolved into formulaic, mindless entertainment many years ago, but every once in a while, there's a little glimpse of something new and different. I really liked Ranger's storyline in this installment -- I won't say more (because spoilers) but it was quite compelling and involved some highly entertaining Stephanie/Ranger field trips. Still, I also had to wade through all the other predictable elements: Grandma Mazur will cause a scandal at the funeral home; Mr. Plum will quietly die inside at the kitchen table; Stephanie will lose at least one car to an explosion, etc. I'm hoping Ms. Evanovich will finally get bored of writing the same thing and inject some new life into the series, which is why I keep slogging through these ...
If you are a diehard fan, it's always fun, even when ridiculous. I especially enjoy Lorelei King's reading.
Its been awhile since I read a Stephanie Plum, Sure, same basic story line but there was a lot more Ranger and the story was entertaining and i wanted to keep reading. Better than the last couple.
Fun as usual, better than some of these higher numbers have been (or maybe I've made peace with Plum never growing as a character? Although she did carry a gun WITH bullets in it in this book. ). Really liked Briggs and the minions, and Grandma accidentally catching Ranger in the shower. ;) plus lots of Joe and Plum being domestic.
Stephanie's latest adventures involve a Russian assassin, a car-dealer and his backroom business and a number of bail bonds.
Stephanie is a lot less incompetent in this one and she actually seems to have leveled up a bit, which pleasantly surprised me. She manages to bring in a number of skips, and she has also been assisting Ranger with a couple of his investigations where she was of actual help instead of a hindrance. That's not to say that she didn't need saving a time or two, but the situations were not completely her fault this time.
The book includes the usual food talk that made me hungry, Morelli and Ranger, explosions, destroyed cars and various colorful characters, including Randy Briggs, a little man who.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would and that might be because it's been quite a while since I read the previous book.
The series continues with Tricky Twenty-Two.

BOTTOM-LINE:
Didn't feel much like a Plum novel
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
Stephanie is looking for a car dealer named Poletti and nobody seems to be missing him or know anything, except Randy Briggs who needs Poletti in jail
.
WHAT I LIKED:
The plot at least amps up this time to include human trafficking. And when someone starts eliminating loose ends, the threat quotient goes up.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
A sub-story with a consulate was ludicrous, and the overall ending way over-the-top.
.
DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow her on social media.

Janet Evanovich does it again. There are very few authors who can make me laugh out loud while I'm reading, but she never fails to do so. Stephanie Plum's on-again off-again relationship with the men in her life takes an interesting twist when the tables are turned and Stephanie has to help Ranger with danger that is stalking his life. As always, a well written story with witty dialogue and unique characters.
