When I was offered the opportunity to read The Amityville Murder house by Henry Roi PR and Hellbound Books I jumped at it.

Written from the perspective of Jen Dodd whose husband Josh is a big fan horror genre. They take a trip to visit the original house of the same title but get a hot tip about a different house that just went on the market that is more haunted.

After a brief tour of the house and learning some of the history Josh, without consulting Jen, buys this house on the spot. Jen is a bit flabbergasted but after time Jen reluctantly goes along with it which you quickly learn is typical for her.

After relocating from Kansas to New York things begin to get interesting.

I would recommend this to fans of the movie with a similar title, haunted houses, or anyone who likes a fast paced story with some gore.

I was given a copy to review via Henry Roi PR and HellBoundBooks. My reviews are always honest and all opinions are my own. #TheAmityvilleMurderHouse #AndyRausch #HenryRoiPR #HellBoundBooks #HorrorBook #BookReview

This was certainly a good splatter filled horror and one I did enjoy. Our Primary characters are Jen and Josh Dodd, Jen is arguably long suffering due to her husbands obsession with all things haunted. So much so he drags her from Kanas to New York, namely Amityville, to tour two supposedly haunted houses. Any annoyance she might have felt by this spontaneous trip is only magnified when Josh decides to purchase one of the houses without so much as asking her.

Dubbed by locals as ‘The Murder House’ the Dodd’s new home is located across town from the infamous Amityville Horror house that became famous in the 1970s. Jen soon learns that while she had never heard of ‘The Murder House’ that it is far more dangerous than its famed counterpart. As the strange happening intensify Jen must try and fight to not become another number in the house’s death toll.

The horror and haunting of this book are brilliant. The only complaint in that regard is the trope of the animal suffering to highlight the horror, being an animal lover it just doesn’t always sit right with me if it is there for shock value. But I digress. Despite this I did enjoy this one but I did have an issue with the protagonists. Namely I couldn’t really stand either Jen or Josh. While I fully sympathised with Jen she just seemed to, despite not wanting to and complaining, go with the decisions of Josh and those around her. So much so I have to say I was mostly hoping the house WOULD claim Josh and Jen has victims. But this didn’t really take away my enjoyment.

In fact, despite being an horror fan, I’m actually known for oftentimes not caring for the protagonists. For example American Horror Story season one, I couldn’t have cared less about the family at all but I still enjoyed the series. What I am trying to say is while I wanted to murder Jen and Josh myself for half the book it actually didn’t affect my enjoyment, if anything it enhanced it.

For what it is I really did enjoy this one, the haunting and horror are top tier, there is even a bit of splatter gore in there, the plot and pace are perfect with a slow build to the move and then everything begins to spiral out of control. Including the mental state of our protagonists. I particularly liked how it was difficult to work out who was real, who was a ghost and who was arguably an hallucination of Jen’s mind.

If you are a fan of media like American Horror Story or fiction that depicts descents to madness and aggressive hauntings this one is for you. I know I enjoyed it despite the things mentioned above and will be looking at more of the authors work.

This book is reading like a really bad B movie you find on shudder or Tubi with really bad acting, ridiculous lines and lots of repetition. If I read “he considered this” one more time, my eyeballs will roll out of my skull. The characters are flat, the story is flat. I can’t even finish it. Jen and Josh are that annoying toxic couple no one wants to be around. Josh is a narcissist, Jen has no backbone. It’s all so corny.

There is a racist comment in here that has NO reason being there. It was sprinkled in like diced onions on ice cream; made no sense and it was just plain gross. The quote was: “I thought you’d be late. Your father used to say all the time, ‘Jen is late everywhere she goes, what is she black?’”

DNF.

Note to author: This was tacky. Do better.

I would not recommend this book.
