Durante los días que estuve trabajando en la FIL Lima 2017 escuché opiniones muy buenas acerca del trabajo de Ariana Harwicz. Tanto que cuando empecé a leer esta novela, la empecé con fascinación pero, también, con cierto temor.
Y es que La débil mental (Animal de Invierno, 2016) explora la relación entre una hija y su madre, pero vista desde el otro lado de la moneda. Ariana se ha atrevido a describir sobre lo que nadie suele hablar del vínculo familiar e incluso no ha tenido miedo en ir mucho más allá. Y es que no todo es amor y cariño. También existe la envidia, el odio, la desconfianza y la venganza.
Esta novela nos mantiene al filo de la tensión con cada episodio que ocurre en la vida de ambas mujeres, dos personajes que viven juntas en las afueras del entorno urbano. Son episodios cargados de fuertes emociones como el deseo y el sexo y el querer destruirse una a la otra. Es una novela que llega a su clímax con la venganza, una venganza que se ve influida por los amores caníbales de ambas.
De La débil mental he quedado pasmado y maravillado. Es radical, violenta, sórdida, un tanto oscura pero real y, sobretodo, lleva al límite las emociones de ambos personajes, de los cuales nunca llegamos a saber sus nombres y, siendo sincero, termina sin importar.
Claramente, estamos frente a una novela pero que, gracias a su dulce juego de palabras, termina convirtiéndose en una obra de arte y poesía.

struggling with how to rate this one. beautiful writing. pretty disturbing subject matter. exploration of what happens if we follow our worst impulses — as a creative exercise it kinda reminds me of ethel cain but i might be way off

The characters in Feebleminded pop off the page with every line; it is absolute poetry. I read 'Die, my love' before Christmas and immediately ordered this second book in the pseudo-trilogy. I am so glad I did. Gosh, so what to say? It is a harrowing account of a mother-daughter relationship which echoes those that have gone before. It brings to mind the horrors of the hidden abuses that we probably don't think about too often, but that no doubt go on, in this sad world.
The relationship that the daughter has with the man is shown with a minimalism that works perfectly. The desire and longing made clear and open; bare and rugged. This book will, with no doubt, disgust and delight. The latter being an experience from reading such a refreshing and brutal account of a relationship between mother and daughter set against the rawness of survival at all costs.
I love Ariana's writing so very much and although I haven't read the original, the sheer complexity of the text suggests exquisite translation. I cannot wait until the third book is translated this Summer!

Somehow, Feebleminded may be even more coruscating, perverse, and angry than Die, My Love? Is Ariana Harwicz a new favorite? She is maybe one of the most daring writers working right now.

Reading Harwicz writing feels like rolling down a grassy hill. I love it, chaotic and all consuming. Can’t wait to read tender now

A diferencia de Matate amor y de Precoz, esta novela de Ariana Harwicz, La débil mental, tiene una cadencia y un ritmo similar al de un poema largo por sus oraciones cortas y por estar repleta de imágenes.
Me costó engancharme pero, una vez que hice el click, no la pude soltar. Eso sí, posee la misma intensidad que las otras novelas, marca registrada de Harwicz, y un desenlace que te deja boqueando, tensa y vibrante a la vez.

The psychological effect of not setting dialogue in quotes nor tagging it creates a whirlwind mental effect, where you are both the mother and daughter character and of course observer all in one. Poetry and violence, not easy to combine, create a feverish, angry, even righteous voice afraid of neither of the crude nor the lofty nor the banal. Like a nightmare.
