I truly cannot say enough great things about this middle grade gem. The characters and situations are all so interesting, layered, unbelievable, but also realistic. This story is engaging and humorous while still diving deep on challenging topics such as what makes a family, true friendship, as well as dealing with grief alone and with the help of others. I cannot wait to push this story into the hands of my students as well as many adults in my life. Dan Gemeinhart knocked it out of the park with this one.

Grief makes Coyote Sunrise wise beyond her years. She is resilient and kind and smart. As she travels the country in a modified bus with her dad, Rodeo, her world view is challenged and grows. The people they meet, and help, along the way help her through her grief and come alive in new ways.

The family we have and the family we make can strengthen us in our darkest, hardest times. We all come from different backgrounds, and because of our experiences we are stronger together. As Coyote says, it’s hard to trust others, but being all alone is even more scary.

I highly recommend this #middlegradereads with caution ⚠️. TW include: Grieving death of spouse/parent, and child/sibling.  LGBTQIA+ issues. Physical abuse.

I really liked this book. Certain parts were a little strange. But it was good.

I'm not sure about the legality of driving a school bus without a special license (even for personal use). It seems like some states might require it for a bus as big as Yager. And you cannot tell me that Lester is licensed to drive a bus.

This book begs to be compared to a childhood favorite of mine, Road Trip by Gary Paulsen. (In that book, the character needs a special license to drive a bus. But I looked it up and I'm still not sure??) Very similar plot structure, wildly different plot. But it's interesting to compare the two. If Gemeinhart didn't read it before writing this, I'd be shocked. Father and Child go off on a trip, child has an ulterior motive, racing to be a clock, animal sidekick, along the trip are joined by: a stricter guy who thinks everyone is kind of crazy; a troubled friend of the kid; and an older woman who the kids really like.
One of them is running from the law?? trouble with the police?? they think they've missed their shot?? I mean come one Gemeinhart.

Lastly I have weird feelings about Rodeo. I mean, running away from your grief. Forcing a child to deal with you and your inability to be a parent for 5 years. FIVE YEARS!
