Very informative and well organized exploration of the deep!

I appreciated the way the author walked readers through the background of what the deep sea is and the wonders that fill it, before moving on to the human-sea relationship.

Although this was a book designed to teach, it also demands action from readers, laying out practical ways to be an activist in defense of the deep.

I left with a newfound appreciation and understanding of an area that I only had surface level knowledge of previously. At times I did have to push myself to keep reading, but I’m glad that I did.

Interesting read. I appreciated the author's passion for protecting the depths, particularly her detailed discussion about the dangers of deep sea mining and overfishing.

Fascinating look at the landscape and ecosystems of the deep ocean and the threats looming over it. I expected more about deep sea fish and animals, but honestly, I was completely satisfied with this - the biodiversity on sea mounts and thermal vents was very cool, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this one fits in conjunction with the OTHER deep sea book I just checked out.

Starts off with cool animal facts, ends with a huge bummer about how capitalism will destroy even the furthest reaches of our planet. Having trouble giving a number rating.

This was so good! I’m happy a fellow ocean-lover recommended this to me.

If you like reading about animals in general or ocean animals in particular, you would love this as the weird world of the fauna of the deep are explored in detail (with pictures!!!), including their crazy senses. It reminded me a bit of Ed Yong‘s book An Immense World in parts.

If you like reading about the fishing or mining industries and how they apply to the ocean (think Outlaw Ocean by Ian Urbina) then you would also like this! There was a lot of info that was quite recent as of 2024 as to the state of the world’s fisheries and deep sea mining projects.

Overall a quick, fascinating read!

A really great book on deep sea marine biology as well as in depth looks into what's happening in the political and economic world surrounding our massive blue regions. The first part of the book focuses on the geography and creatures in the deep reaches of the Abyssal zone and Hadal zone. She then gives a detailed report of how humans have exploited the oceans in the past and how we continue to exploit them now, even in light of new information of how negatively the world can be affected by the disruption of life in the depths. It's a good and interesting read for sure, especially if you love marine biology and deep sea life.
