This is my 5th five star review for this author. I’m flabbergasted. Each book has brought me pure joy through the richness of the story and the fantastic details of the relatable characters.
But, this story. WOW. I absolutely adored this book.
It’s perhaps my favorite so far. Hard to say since I’ve enjoyed them all so immensely.
This book was so captivating!
1952 Darby, (Her mother! Her father! Her stepfather!) Esme (squeal!) Sam….The Dollhouse.
What a kaleidoscope of people & places. Hopes & Dreams.
2016 Rose had my heart & soul. Damn what a relatable modern woman.
The duel timelines has been one of my absolute favorite things about all of this author’s books.
I’m giddy with anticipation to read another book by this author.

A really great story told in both the past and present. It centers around the barbizon which is a apartment building in 2016. Rose lives there with her boyfriend until they break up and she's thrusting to a dog sitting venture for one of the ladies on the fourth floor. That lady is Darby who was a resident of the building in the 1950s when it was called the dollhouse. Back then young women lived in the barbizon while they became secretaries or pursued acting careers. Darby was a young woman going to typing school. She befriended the maid, Esme and the two gotten some trouble. Darby is expelled from the school and her mother disowned her. Darby is beginning a relationship with Sam who she met through esme. But then as Esme is a squealer of a heroin ring and is a wanted woman. Sam tells Darby to run away to California with him but Darby won't do so without saying goodbye to Esme. As may take this poorly possibly because she is in love with Darby and instead cuts Darby's face and Derby accidentally pushes her over the edge of the building to her death. She then writes Sam telling her that Derby died. This is a story that rose on Earth as she is a journalist looking for a good story. Together with her photojournalist Jason they chased on the story. Rose and Jason ended up in a relationship as well. At the very end Rose and Jason are together and Sam and Darby rekindled her romance. Really great story.
Excellent. I love this book. I loved the characters and following the story until the end.

I was really excited to read this book and it really hooked me. But I must say I was slightly disappointed by the climax and resolution. Davis was laying so much foundation with great foreshadowing which always keep me wanting more. And then suddenly it's all coming to a speedy close. It didn't feel natural. All in all it was a very entertaining read and I enjoyed it.
Just began this book and so far it is an entertaining read. The premise is built around a building in NYC. The action moves between two main characters and time periods.
The chapter switches are beginning to become annoying. You are reading along in the "modern" 2016 era and invested, interested in how the story is moving. Turn the page, bam now you are back into 1952. Same thing getting interested in how the story is developing then bam turn the page new chapter, new time period.

that ending took it from three stars to two. bandwagon - I should have known. 1950s NYC was the draw, but . . .

I really liked this story. I am a huge historical fiction reader. What I really liked about this one was that it was set in 1952. The plot was good and there was good character development. I’d recommend this book to others.
