A satisfying conclusion to the Immortals series. I would have given it a higher rating except for one big, to me, issue. I am not giving anything away as A) it was referred to in a blurb on the back of the paperback edition I read and B) you've seen it coming in the past 3 books, namely the Daine/Numair "romance."

I realize that I am potentially projecting current perspectives onto a work of fiction, much less one set in a world similar to our past, however I have a real problem with any romance occurring between a 14 - 16 year old and a 30 year old. Every time it appeared in the book it creeped me out.

That said, it was a well handled wrap up and if you can ignore it, as I mostly did, you should enjoy the series and the book.

One of Tamora Pierce's best series -- one I already want to re-read. Pierce creates some of the best strong female leads in the genre. Love, love, love these books.

I have to admit, part of the reason I re-read this series is because I remember the romance in this final book so vividly. Pierce did a really masterful job with Daine and Numair's realization of their love for one another, in a way that was so exciting and sensual but not explicit or inappropriate.
I remember reading this at a much younger age, and thinking it was so unexpected because Numair was like, 30, and Daine is 16. That seemed like such a weird concept to me, but again Pierce wrote their romance in such a way that it wasn't gross or non-mutual. It fits so well with Daine's strong personality and maturity, and I remember being completely drawn into their blossoming love and feelings for one another.

It was a satisfying conclusion, although I think the giant battle scenes were a bit skimmed-over (in favor of focusing on the pieces that were important to the plotline, and not getting bogged down in the magnitude of the war/final battle scenes). The plot for this character got so huge, with the Gods/threat to the universe, it might have taken away from Daine's story a bit.

I love this series, and I think every young girl should read these books (and boys, too!). These stories are so empowering, exciting, and fun.

The romance between Daine and Numair hits different now that I'm his age instead of hers, but—at least it's fiction. I shall imagine her older, and him maybe a couple years younger.

I was reading this series with my ten year old son, we were both loving them, we get halfway through the last one and BAM the teenager is making out with her teacher. I had to stop because we were both so icked.
Seriously, the relationship between Daine and Numair is so gross. I get that we're in a fantasy land and it's medieval or whatever. But teenagers are reading it here and now and it's just so, so bad.

I feel that I have to rate this book at one star, despite enjoying it, due to the inappropriate relationship between Diane and Numair. She’s 13 when she meets him and he’s “in his late 20s” and then after three years of being student and teacher, they “fall in love”? At this point, she’s only 16 and he’d be 30 or more. That’s…not okay and the power dynamic is also really bad.

I wish that this wasn’t a part of this book, because the darkings are delightful and the main parts of the story are great, but the relationship was so unnecessary and upsetting.

Again, OH THE FEELS. A wonderful ending to a wonderful series. And I have to say, I love love LOVE how Pierce saved all the romance till this last book. Romance is certainly an important topic in YA lit, but I was really happy to see a young female protagonist developing and growing into her own without making it about a boy. By this last book, she was independent enough for some love without it being detrimental to her character or to her the author's treatment of her throughout the series. Can't wait to read other works by Pierce and get all the backstory on Alanna.

This was incredible and so different from the first three! I loved learning about the different realms and seeing the gods in their elements. Daine is just so great- always learning but self-assured, looking out for her friends (two and four legged alike), and just generally being super awesome. And I loved the darkings!!!!! Every book adds some new adorable creature. The last chapter made me well up with emotion and HELLOOOOOOOO SHIP! HELLO! HI! I'VE BEEN WAITING. And it was worth it. The ending gave me a Flynn/Rapunzel but reversed vibe hehe. The afterword by Tamora Pierce was SO interesting too, I liked reading about her influences, including the Carpet from Aladdin! Ahhhh. This series was great. I can't wait to reread it and Alanna someday. They're so compelling, with such great emotion, action, and dialogue, that you excuse the slight choppiness and shortness of the books. It's just compact awesomeness. Not sure how the other series will even compare ;)
