This was incredible and so different from the first three! I loved learning about the different realms and seeing the gods in their elements. Daine is just so great- always learning but self-assured, looking out for her friends (two and four legged alike), and just generally being super awesome. And I loved the darkings!!!!! Every book adds some new adorable creature. The last chapter made me well up with emotion and HELLOOOOOOOO SHIP! HELLO! HI! I'VE BEEN WAITING. And it was worth it. The ending gave me a Flynn/Rapunzel but reversed vibe hehe. The afterword by Tamora Pierce was SO interesting too, I liked reading about her influences, including the Carpet from Aladdin! Ahhhh. This series was great. I can't wait to reread it and Alanna someday. They're so compelling, with such great emotion, action, and dialogue, that you excuse the slight choppiness and shortness of the books. It's just compact awesomeness. Not sure how the other series will even compare ;)
The Realms of the Gods - 2/5⭐️
Genre: Young Reader Fantasy
Guys, did I miss something?! Daine is 16 years old and Numair is 30?!?! I really do not like it, especially since this is a Young Reader series. I know this is fantasy and I could probably overlook it if it was marketed towards upper-YA but it’s for 12 year olds

As a conclusion it kind of let me down, even though the writing and world building are stunning as usual
Ahhh this one, the divisive final book to tie off Daine's story! I say divisive because of the student-mentor romance that Pierce throws into the mix here. I remember questioning it a bit back in my youth, so I guess the pairing felt off even back then. Truthfully the dynamic she had with Kaddar in Book 3 was far more interesting (and appropriate, haha). Were the 90s such a different time? I wonder if Pierce regrets writing in the age-gap romance here. Probably a prickly topic regardless.
As for the actual story, I found it to be the most plodding of the quartet. The dragon stuff was fun (dragon obsessive over here, howdy), but we're taken out of it way too soon. And once they had two ancient dragons on their side, I stopped worrying about the main characters surviving. Daine's animal powers alone could win an entire battle, but that wouldn't make for an entertaining story, eh?
I remember loving the ensuing Kel books tremendously, so I'm very intrigued to see how those hold-up. They went way more in focus on the knighthood process and read a bit more adult. We'll see how my memory holds up there...

The book was great overall, but I think that maybe a trip to the land of the gods should have taken place in the third book, though it makes since that it doesn't. It's just that with the battle brewing, it would have been more interesting to actually be on earth for it. Plus, they never told us what people thought of their dissapearance? How long were they gone for anyway? A week? Longer? Some details also didn't make sense, like how did Chaos find Ozorne?
Also, the fact that Tortall had a sure win made it very..anti-climactic. I mean, with two grown dragons, plus animals, plus the best mages and fighters, all on the side of Tortall-- I mean there was no suspence at all. We've only lost one significant character and even then it didn't mean that much to anyone besides Daine.
Also, maybe it's because I read and re-read this when I was much older, and even though I knew it was going to happen, I was still really bothered by the Numair and Daine's relationship. The fact that he's 30 and she's 16 most importantly. I really liked their teacher/student dynamic, but not their romantic relationship. Ew.
Another thing that bothered me that Daine didn't really have any friends who were her age, or any girl friends. The closest people to her were her animals and Numair, plus maybe Alanna and Onua. I wish we saw characters who appeared in the first book more!

3.5 stars really.
Reminded me in some ways of one of Rick Riordans books where Percy and Annabeth cross Tartarus(I can’t remember which book that is lol). I liked it. I do enjoy her unique mythical animals intertwined with other legendary creatures, how she meshes it all together. I did especially like the dragons and platypus added to this one. Daine’s story isn’t my absolute favorite but it certainly gives way more insight to the world and creatures in it, they become characters themselves, not just the magical humans.

This was my favourite book in the series when I was younger. Not so much this time around - too much faffing around in the realms of the gods. Wasn't so into the romance either - 13 year old me was all for Daine hooking up with some 30 year old dude. Current me is less into it. Also, still unsure how to pronounce anyone's name.
This book was just amazing! A wonderful conclusion to the Daine series end, and I'm so happy at the ending that we got! Daine and Numair are swept into the Realm of the Gods, and we finally learn the mystery behind Daine's past and her parentage. As well as this...FINALLY Daine and Numair are forced to confront their feelings for each other and I don't think I've ever squealed so much in my life! Thank you Tamora Pierce for writing this wonderful series for us all to enjoy!
I enjoyed the finale to The Immortals series, but I still prefer The Song of the Lioness series more. I wasn't crazy about the romance in this one, but I think I always say that about adventure stories. I ended up liking Daine a lot more than I thought I would from the beginning, and I almost always enjoy tales of great deeds. I'm looking forward to starting the Protector of the Small series after a small break.
