It was fine, but I'm beginning to think perhaps the Tortall universe is not quite me after all. And my friend who is a high praiser of the world and Tamora's books is a tad too nostalgic! The books are fine but I don't get my friend's hype or joy, perhaps because I never read these books as a kid like like they did.
Since these books, in my country, are seen as books for kids around age 10 and up, I have been lenient on my stars and judged them by a lower standard. Something I always do for kids/teen books and especially older works.
Are the stories somewhat enjoyable, they are, but for each book and series I have read so far something just feels off or falls short for me. I do not doubt kids/younger audience might enjoy these books/series, I might even have done so as a kid. But as an adult for some reason I find other middlegrade/young adult series more interesting, not necessarily better written though. That said, I plan on reading the other series when the library has them available, or give them a shot.

My least favourite of all Tamora Pierce's books but for all that I am unable to dislike darklings and there are parts of the book that I thouroughly enjoyed
This book had something like three incredible chapters with seven incredibly boring chapters wedged between them. Overall this series was more inconsistent than Song of the Lioness - I wanted Daine to have a human friend other than Numair, and I never quite understood her loyalty to Tortall. I liked the world building and the plot, but too much of this final book happened off screen while Daine was screwing around in the Realm of the Gods. I mean... I know that's the name of the book. But most of the book was just Daine sleeping in the Realm of the Gods, having dreams about Tortall.
On the other hand this is a YA series from the nineties that I read for the frost time at age 32; maybe I would have been more taken by it had I read it as an actual child.
