An entertaining but frustrating read. Hannah is very good at creating intriguing mysteries, but doesn't always deliver. In this case, the answer to the mystery turned out to be both trivial and farfetched. What's worse, the characters' motivations made little sense. I have no idea why the uncharismatic murder suspect was worshipped by his friends, or why the tough, brilliant business woman chose to live with the dimwit football fanatic. The relationship between Charlie and Simon isn't developing at all, and he's more of an asshole than ever before. I never feel as normal and well-adjusted as when reading Hannah, and usually enjoy the twisted, damaged souls that populate her novels, but enough is enough. Even dysfunction and craziness have to make some kind of sense.

Very slow and a lot of characters to keep track of for what feels like no reason

I wish I'd written this. I think it's superb, though I had a slight niggle with it towards the end.

When her plane is delayed overnight, Gaby finds herself sharing a room with Lauren. Lauren is terrified and terrifying, but won't explain why she is scared of Gaby and blurts out something about an innocent man going to prison for a murder he didn't commit. Gaby discovers that the man is Tim... the only man she ever loved... and sets out to prove his innocence. None of the characters are likeable but I was determined to finish the book since I enjoyed earlier ones in this series. The victim was an awful, manipulative woman (Francine) married to Tim (who quotes highly intellectual poetry that most are unable to comprehend). They are supported by Tim's friends, Kerry & Dan, who left their own lives get turned upside-down because they value their friendship with Tim and will put up with a lot of crap from Francine because of it. Even though Gaby is in a relationship with another, she's determined to poke her nose in and ask questions but not answer many put forth by the police. Just about everybody is holding something back from the police so this is a tough case to solve and follow.

A book that I have been meaning to read but kept putting off because it was too gigantic to carry it with me to college. I finally read it when I came home this summer and I didn't like it. It is a mystery book but one of the worst possible kind of mystery books anyone could read.

I was tempted a few times to discard this book but persevered because I liked Sophie Hannah's other books. This was a 2 1/2 star book for me. I bumped it up to 3 but then lowered it to 2 after writing the review reminded me how little I liked it. The ending, though "tidy" made me wonder why it took almost 500 pages to get there.

The story revolves around a man, Tim, who confesses to killings his disabled wife but won't give a reason. There is another woman, Gaby, who is or maybe isn't part of a triangle. But in the end I really didn't care about Tim or Gaby. They deserved one another. The psychological part of this thriller centered on the fact that the wife was a horrible person who became paralyzed and unable to speak after a stroke. I just wondered why the people who surrounded her got involved with her to begin with. Life may be too short to read books this long with so little to offer.
