I really loved this book - I think mainly as I listened to it on audio. The accents and characters were so much better on audio! I loved their lives and the brassiness/boldness of all the women and that it was based on true experiences. Nice to have a story where women at the center are strong, fierce badasses :)

If history classes taught us about movements like The Forty Thieves, I think we all would have paid a bit more attention. Beezy Marsh gives readers a chance to explore the seedier side of post-World War II London. The theme of the book could easily be summed up as revenge. Alice's revenge arc was believable, compelling even. I believed that her brother's betrayal and the loss of the only innocence she had left could lead her to take justice into her own hands and start her own gang. But, Nell's transformation was a bit less convincing. I found it difficult to believe that a young factory worker disowned by her parents for getting pregnant outside of marriage could survive, thrive, even, in prison and morph into a double agent of destruction. She needed more development.

I’d give more stars if I hadn’t had to read the phrase “_____ in a month of Sundays” 7 times over the course of 321 pages.

The audiobook narrator deserves ALL THE AWARDS for the stunning performance she gave this novel. It felt like I was watching a play vs listening to an audiobook. That said, the actual story didn’t do much for me. All of the characters were so unlikable. Even the main character who you’re supposed to root for as the underdog. Either way, if you’re going to read this, do the audiobook.

This book started out so slow for me and I was able to leave it for long periods of time. It was my January Book of the Month selection. I loved reading the back matter and had never heard of this particular gang before. I’m not familiar with British vocabulary so I found many of the terms challenging and did a lot of Googling to understand what was going on. The book got better as I read on but I just didn’t love it.

A fun light really quick read. I haven’t watched much of Peaky Blinders but this book gives me similar vibes but the whole masters of the story are females.
Nothing too eye opening but yeah would recommend for a light read!

It took me a little bit to get into this book. I’d say it wasn’t until halfway through that the story turned around and sucked me in. I think if Nell got her footings a little earlier, maybe we could have more of the Alice family backstory, it would have at least been a 4 for me.
