Celia is held captive by Edward on his island for a year.  During that time he only shows up every three months with no phone calls or communication.  He wants her completely broken down so he can build her back up the way he wants.  She's still an unlikable character & he's a creep.  Asking her how her first period felt when she was young & how she lost her virginity in their honesty "sessions" was creepy.  Both of them are manipulative and may or may not be gas lighting each other.  He wants to kill her and have his revenge and she revisits past traumas.  They still have sex with his clothes on and he eats her and screws her but she has no access to him.  He likes ownership and submission so it's a battle of wills.  I'll continue with the series because I'm reading the whole catalog.

Well, book one (Rivalry) ended with a shock, this one ends with more of a question (about the future.) Same great writing. If you've read the Fixed Trilogy you probably hate Celia. Well, in this book you learn more about her past and why she is the way she is (or was.) She starts to grow on you, and you almost feel sorry for her. Edward, for the most part is the same cold alpha as he was in book one, but we get more insight into his thoughts in this book... he's not quite vulnerable, but we get to see a softer side to him. There is some self discovery for the characters. This book is quite intense and a teeny bit on the darker side. It's a combination of suspense and romance (and erotica.) It's a captivating story and beautifully written. Due to the nature of the book, it is suitable for mature readers.

*I received an ARC of this book.

Honestly, I didn't like the first book all that much. Celia acted like such an idiot even when she paraded as being a smart person. I almost died of secondhand embarrassment. Buuuuuut this book is so, so much better.
After that insane no-body-no-crime declaration by Edward at the end of book 1, I was totally thrown. I did not expect the story to take the turn it did but I feel that just added so much more depth to it.

Now, onto this book.
I FKIN LOVED IT. I usually stay away from books with dark themes but this one was a catharsis of sorts. I really liked Celia's character development and the delve into her psyche; the trauma in no way justifies the shit that she did but it definitely provided more insight on her character.
Celia acknowledging and accepting that she needed therapy was such a great progress for her - from being emotionally locked up for a decade and half and conditioning herself to not feel anything to accepting and trying to understand her "watercolor blobs" of emotions, I'm so proud of her.

I'm really eager to see what happens in book 3 ^^

This is the second book, so please read book one first. It starts right where the first one left, Slay had an ending that had me on edge until I got Ruin, and it just kept getting better and better, I love the angst and I love how this characters Celia and Edward interact, I am ruined now I need the next one like yesterday, this is so good. A must read top list for sure.
