I love Gus and January’s story so much. He better have actually divorced that ex so I can believe him and Janie get married one day UGH. I love the characters banter as well, there was definitely times i caught myself giggling.

I’m not really sure how I feel about the book—it wasn’t bad, but I got bored a little more than halfway into it. It wasn’t a total slow burn romance so when they both confess they like each other early on, I lost interest. It was well written, HOWEVER, there’d be times where it’s feel painfully millennial I had to cringe. And I hateeee the pop culture references—Taylor swift, “new phone who dis” (why?), and I’m sure others. Wasn’t too many but I felt a stab in my chest every time it’d happen. Gus was great. January sometimes was too much of a white woman with white savior complex for me to even try to pretend she’s a woc. And the pizza print sweats and very specific printed tees… girl buy some nice clothes. I guess overall I’m a bit disappointed with the book especially since it’s my first time reading Emily Henry and this one is hyped up a lot.

I really enjoy Emily Henry’s writing. She manages to take broken people who clearly have issues and make me like them, and she does so in a humorous way. I read some of the 1-star reviews and while I agree with some of the things they are saying, I think those people miss the whole point of a book like this. For me, her books are a departure from the more serious books I read, yet I feel like her characters are people I could know and like. I also feel the chemistry she tries to create between her characters, with a bit of the angst thrown in for good measure.
I enjoyed this book. If you grow up thinking your parents have the perfect life and you end up finding out otherwise, it could have an effect on everything you think about life. I like that January and Gus’s humorous back and forth love and angst settle on the idea of just focusing on being happy for now. Really, that’s all any of can do because you never know what life is going to throw at you, so it’s a pretty good theme for a book.
This is my 2nd Emily Henry book, and I’m looking forward to more. I’m wondering, does she always write about authors?
