I'll admit, I snort-laughed more than I'd like through this book - not because it was really funny, but because it wasn't supposed to be... Dahlia just has a way of dropping a line that tickled that dry wit bone I like to nurture now and again. She's innocent yet snarky, oddly bold even as she is bashful and far too honest to survive long in the Fae world, and yet she does. I can't help it, I like her. I like her a lot. And when she meets Mira? Well, the gloves are off then and this mismatched duo really galvanizes the story and takes it to the next level, far more so than the dubious Prince.

I mean, the Prince is nice and all - good looking and mysterious, but he almost seems superfluous, even though he is fundamental to the plot... as in, there wouldn't be a plot without him. But really, the friendships that are formed and showcased here are the backbone of this narrative and why I kept reading, and why I will follow the series.

My Final Verdict on Taken

Fiery and inventive, this is a series worth catching up to. The Fae are cold and brutal, yet the layers that are slowly revealed under that ice keep this book fresh and appealing - not to mention the friendships that inspire no small amount of envy in the reader - just me? Ok then.

If you like The selection books this will be right up your street! it was a good introduction to the series a little predictable in places but an easy read....

Due to a Tik-tok recommendation (I really need to get off that app), I started reading Taken by Katerina Martinez. It is the first book in The Coldest Fae series and follows a seamstress who gets kidnapped by fae in order to compete in deadly trials to win the honor of marrying the fae prince. Unbeknownst to the fae who kidnapped her, she is very human; if anyone finds out the truth about her, she will be executed on the spot. All in all, it was a very intriguing premise and was a mix between Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Lightlark by Alex Aster.

What I loved:
❄ The sheer amount of sarcasm and witty banter. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the main character flipped off and cursed out the soldiers who kidnapped her in front of the entire court. It was hilarious and I would have loved to have seen it in person
❄ The world building. I love the complexity of the trials and how even winning you can lose and vice versa. I also really love the monsters in the fae world such as the Wenlow. I’m curious to learn more about the power dynamics and why the monsters are moving closer and closer to the castle
❄ Favorite quote: “’Please tell me you have an invisibility cloak in the wardrobe, or something,’ Gullie begged. ‘Oh, yes!’ I hissed, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ Gullie blinked at me, dumbfounded. ‘Wait, you have one?’ ‘Sarcasm!’”

My questions that will hopefully be addressed in future books:
❄ Who were her parents? Did the three mages know of her heritage and that’s why they sheltered her all those years? Clearly, she must have some sort of fae/mortal blood line in order to have her powers but still enough human characteristics. I also wonder how much the prince knows about her and her parents…he is definitely hiding something
❄ Why did the prince deny having a brother? Did he do something bad or is he dead?

The heroine was just too stupid to live. She had zero inquisitiveness, she just accepted anything she was told with zero questions asked. Her moms tell her she had no parents, she just accepted it without asking what happened. A random dude comes to take her, she just goes along without asking the purpose. And the premise of her "superpower" being a seamstress is just too stupid for words.

I did quite like the writing style of the author and the way she described the world and all, but the flow of the story didn't feel great and neither did any of the characters. I was more than halfway through the first book and realized I liked absolutely none of the characters. The hero is just mentioned as being extremely handsome, over and over, but I could detect zero chemistry between the MC's. It was just... Boring.

»Really? Fighting each other on a battlefield for the privilege of marrying a Prince is one of the greatest honors we can receive?«
»You disagree.«
»I do. Strongly.«

A quirky, British girl gets kidnapped to the fae realm to basically compete in a combination of Hunger Games-ish and the Bachelor. There might not be cameras but oh boy is everyone watching and fangirling.
