Okay. In true Rebecca fashion I had emotional damage from the first few pages and throughout the book.
The way she depicts grief, so accurate and true. Just hits you right in the feels.
Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Favorite Quotes:
✨ War was such a spiteful bitch; she took everything we loved and handed us back a folded flag in return, telling us the honor of their sacrifice was a just and equal payment. It wasn’t.
✨ Your father died, not you. Go dress yourself, grab your backpack, and get to school.
✨ Whatever you need me to be.
✨ It’s you, fire and ice; everything I know that’s December.

I started off crying on a very public train (yes, I was that person), then quickly spiraled into secondhand embarrassment. Honestly, I’m just glad I didn’t start my Rebecca Yarros journey with this book. By the end, I was mostly annoyed and frustrated (I still love her thou and I’m committed to finishing the Flight & Glory series, eventually). This one just didn’t hit for me.
Josh writing his number in permanent marker on Ember’s arm and saying, 'It’s not so easy to wash off, and neither am I,' is the stupidest thing ever and ✨ might ✨ be the highlight of this book for me.
Thank you and goodnight.

I've read this several times now. It still breaks me every time. And puts me back together too.

I just hate a conflict that happens 1 - 3 times over the same topic in the last 30 pages bc it feels like an after-thought and they still a) have unprotected sex and b) get together at the end. like the fight seems rushed to me, the resolution even quicker, and the makeup sex is a tacky way to add one more spicy scene before the page count requirement is met. Josh seemed too good to be true as a MMC, like he had literally no flaw. and December was cool at the beginning but I found how she could solve everything also to be a little too perfect for me. take a shot anytime Josh's mouth "slanted" over hers btw and you'd be tipsy at least. the writing was just a lil' repetitive I also didn't like some of the more outdated phrases, like Josh saying he already had his trophy, when getting December in his arms. It felt off. being a fan of RY's and having lived in CO, it's cool (and a relief) to see how her writing style has grown over the years (and the description of her MMC remains the same bc of her hubby which I adore), and to see so many CO colleges listed I knew about. Also learned more about military life, knowing she was writing these while waiting for her husband to return from deployment made the death of her dad storyline all the more real. I liked Gus, the bro, the most.
